Union Says Salaries Are Falling

Billy Hunter, director of the NBA players association, plans another negotiating session with commissioner David Stern and they will likely discuss falling salaries.

The union says total player compensation will fall this season, which would be only the second drop in the salary cap era that began in the 1984-85 season.

"We have some concern, but I think a lot of it has to do with the system," Hunter said Thursday. "I think it has to do with the economy, I think it has more to do with attitude. I just think that they decided they're just going to be a lot more cautious and restricting in terms of spending dollars."

Hunter also said there is approximately $1.5 billion less in committed contracts now than in 2005-06, the first year of the deal.

Celtics Owner Claims NBA Posting Better Financials Than Expected

From what information Celtics' owner Wyc Grousbeck has deciphered, the NBA’s financial state is uneven. Commissioner David Stern has said that half or even as many as 20 of the 30 teams are in debt.

“Financially, not every team is very happy this year,’’ Grousbeck said. “The league is posting results that are better than I probably thought they would be, leaguewide, but on the other hand, there are still some trouble spots.

“It isn’t the happiest picture; it isn’t the best picture I can think of. It could be better. It definitely could be better leaguewide, and we’ve got some issues we need to address.’’

Rodman Temporarily Detained In Europe

Dennis Rodman was temporarily detained in Germany for allegedly skipping out on a hotel bill.

The bill was for a postgame party worth $5,100, prosecutors said on Monday.

Rodman had played in a "USA Legends of Basketball" exhibition game in the town of Trier and threw a party afterward.

Organizers of the game agreed to pick up the tab for Rodman's overnight stay at the hotel, but not an additional expense for beverages consumed at the party, which he paid upon being released.
