For about an hour on Wednesday night, it appeared as if Notre Dame forward Ryan Humphrey might soon be playing basketball for the Utah Jazz.

Then, just as the first round of the 2002 NBA Draft concluded, the Jazz announced that they had traded away Humphrey, along with their second-round pick, center Jamal Sampson of California, to the Orlando Magic for the rights to Stanford center Curtis Borchardt.

Borchardt, who chose to enter this year"s draft following his junior season at Stanford, had been taken by Orlando with the 18th selection, just one pick ahead of Utah"s No. 19 pick in the first round.

Jazz officials admitted they went into this year"s draft looking to acquire an outside shooter. But with an opportunity to get a big man like Borchardt who can shoot, rebound and block shots, they felt that the trade was in their best interests in what team owner Larry H. Miller called ""likely the most important draft for this team since my first one (in 1985), which was the year we drafted Ka rl Malone.
