Nets Unwilling To Offer Lopez For Carmelo

Aug 31, 2010 12:40 PM

According to one report, the Nets are not willing to include Brook Lopez in an attempt to trade for Carmelo Anthony. But New Jersey's offer of Devin Harris, Derek Favors and draft picks may still give the Nuggets the best pieces in return for Anthony.

No mention is made of whether Anthony would agree to sign an extension with the Nets or the other interested teams as part of a trade out of Denver. Anthony's long-term commitment figures to be a prerequisite before teams offer the Nuggets quality assets in a deal.

The Nuggets have had discussions with the Bulls that center around Luol Deng and Taj Gibson.

The Warriors may offer Stephen Curry, Andris Biedrins and draft picks but are not sure that they will make Curry available.

The Clippers are called a long shot with Chris Kaman and Eric Gordon the likely two targets whom Denver would look to acquire.

Nuggets Prefer To Deal Carmelo To Nets, Kings Or Wolves

Aug 28, 2010 5:05 PM

Sam Amico of NBA.com is reporting that the Nuggets are looking at three teams as destinations for All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony -- the Nets, Kings and Timberwolves.

"Early word around NBA is Nuggets will try to trade Carmelo to 1 of 3 teams: Wolves, Kings, Nets. In other words, careful what you wish for," Amico wrote on his Twitter page.

The New York Post reported on Saturday morning that the Nets are a "legit" suitor for Anthony.

An NBA executive was quoted as saying that New Jersey as the right pieces to acquire the forward.

Nets Are 'Legit' Suitors For Anthony

Aug 28, 2010 4:48 PM

The Nets are believed to be a legitimate contender for Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony reportedly told Denver that he wants to be traded earlier this week. New general manager Masai Ujiri wants to meet with the All-Star forward and try to keep him.

"They have the pieces to trade and the draft picks," one NBA team executive said of the Nets. "He'd play for them. Yes, I do think the Nets have a legit shot."

Nets general manager Billy King refused to comment when pressed by The New York Post.

"I can't comment on trade rumors," King said.

Carmelo, Nuggets May Need To Work Cooperatively

Aug 27, 2010 1:01 PM

As the ill will between Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets grows, apparently even the superstar's spouse is caught in the crossfire.

According to a report in the Denver Post, members of the Nuggets' management privately resent the influence of Anthony's wife, LaLa Vasquez, who is in the entertainment industry.  When Anthony switched his representation to CAA, Vasquez also signed with the agency, which is now pushing for Anthony's departure from Denver.

The Nuggets may just recently have come to the decision to trade Anthony but the team has been exploring the possibility of dealing him since June.

Thursday's Yahoo! Sports report mentions the Nets and Clippers as two teams with the most value to send back to Denver in a trade for Anthony.  But the quality of any package of talent and picks that the Nuggets are able to receive in return for Anthony will be directly dependent on whether Anthony is willing to sign an extension with the team to which he would be traded.

It is unlikely that the Nets or Clippers, or any potential destination, will offer their best assets to Denver unless Anthony is willing to extend his contract simultaneously with the completion of a trade.  No team would be eager to give up valuable pieces for what could end up being a one-year rental of Anthony.

And in turn, Anthony's willingness to commit to any team long term could be heavily influenced by which players that team would trade away for him and how much talent remains on the roster he would be joining.

"While it's nice to dream of the Nuggets acquiring a young player such as New Jersey center Brook Lopez or Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin in a package deal," writes Mark Kiszla, "squabbling between Anthony and team management only figures to drive down any bargaining power Denver might have in trade negotiations. An amicable separation would likely benefit the Nuggets far more than an ugly divorce."

Denver owner Stan Kroenke is reportedly firing back threats to Anthony's representatives and seems willing to play hardball rather than let a player under contract dictate terms.  But in the end, Anthony's power to sign or not sign an extension with Denver's trade partner ensures that the team's management and Anthony will need to work together to come to a resolution on the superstar's future.

Report: Nuggets Preparing To Trade Carmelo

Aug 26, 2010 8:02 PM

According to Yahoo! Sports, the Nuggets look ready to part ways with Carmelo Anthony who has made it clear he wants out of Denver.

Anthony's camp has advised the Nuggets to deal the superstar forward since he plans to leave as a free agent next summer.

The relationship has become contentious, with Anthony's representatives making heavy-handed demands and Stan Kroenke responding in kind.

"It's almost a given they're going to move him," said a team executive who has talked with both the Nuggets and Anthony?s agents.

The Nets and Clippers have trade assets that most appeal to Denver's management, according to the report.  No mention is made of whether Anthony has agreed to sign an extension with those clubs.

Murphy Sees Nets In Playoffs, Understands Future Is Uncertain

Aug 19, 2010 2:21 PM

Troy Murphy landed with the Nets last week as part of a four-team, five-player trade that involved the Pacers, Hornets and Rockets.

A native of New Jersey, Murphy doesn't understand why this offseason's top free agents didn't strongly consider signing with the Nets.

"It's not just because I'm from Jersey, but I couldn't understand when all these free agents were looking for places to go that so many of them overlooked the Nets," he said.

"Really, look at it ... objectively: Besides a great young center and an All-Star point guard, all the pieces are in place for this to be a very good team very quickly once we develop some chemistry. And by that I mean a playoff team."

Murphy, who was attractive to New Jersey in part because of his expiring contract, understands that his time with the Nets might be short -- especially with rookie power forward Derrick Favors waiting in the wings.

"It is what it is," Murphy said.

"Really, I'm happy to be in this position. If it's just for a year, I will do whatever I can do for them in whatever role they want to put me in. I'll do the best job I can. I'm really looking forward to working with (Favors), and I'm hearing nothing but good things ? he can be a stud."

The Knicks are believed to be Anthony's top choice.

Thorn Had 'Lucrative Offer' To Remain With Nets

Aug 13, 2010 3:22 PM

Rod Thorn was introduced as the new president of the 76ers on Thursday.

He stepped down from the same position with the Nets on July 16.

"After my last day with the Nets, sometime in the next 7-to-10 days, I got a call from [Sixers chairman] Ed Snider and the way it was laid out, I saw it as a good opportunity," said Thorn, who insisted that he has no problems with Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, New Jersey's new owner.

"None. I think Mikhail Prokhorov is going to be a great owner," Thorn said. "Over the course of time, there's an accumulation of things, not any one thing, any one reason. I truly enjoyed most of my time with the Nets. But sometimes, you get the feeling it's time to go. I had it before this opportunity came up."

Thorn had a "lucrative offer" to stay from Prokhorov, who also has insisted no friction existed.

Rumors have remained persistent that Thorn wasn't comfortable with the changes with the Nets and/or the length of the contract.

76ers Hire Rod Thorn As President

Aug 12, 2010 1:19 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers today named Rod Thorn, an NBA veteran of more than four decades, as the team?s new President. Ed Stefanski, who had served as the team's President and General Manager since December 4, 2007, will continue in his role as General Manager.

"Rod is one of the most respected basketball minds in the game today," said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider. "When we learned that he would not be re-signing with the Nets, we realized that this would be a terrific opportunity to bring one of the top executives in the NBA to the Sixers to work closely with Ed Stefanski. I'm really pleased to be adding him to our organization. I'm confident that Rod will be a tremendous asset for our team and I?m really looking forward to working with him."

"We felt with the direction we are now heading that it was important for us to have two very strong basketball minds leading the Philadelphia 76ers," said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko. "We are building a strong organization and we're off to a terrific start with the addition of Coach Doug Collins, the best available coach, and Evan Turner, who we feel was the best available player in the draft. Now we have added another top-level executive to help lead us into the future."

"This is a great opportunity to join one of the most-storied franchises in the NBA," said Thorn. "I look forward to once again working with Ed Stefanski and helping Ed Snider and Peter Luukko build a championship team here in Philadelphia."
