Marc Jackson Has Partially Torn Left Hamstring

Oct 28, 2006 1:32 PM

The results of an MRI concluded that Hornets center Marc Jackson has a partially torn left hamstring and he will miss the start of the regular season.

"I just felt something rip," Jackson said. "I just felt something pop. It was a lot of pain, and I knew right then something was wrong.

"I might have to completely shut it down for a few weeks to let it heal just so I can get out there and help the team. We have a lot of good players and a lot of good talent, but they don't have me out there and they need me. I truly believe that."

Scott Unsure Whether Jackson Will Be Ready

Oct 27, 2006 4:04 AM

Hornets center Marc Jackson's status remains uncertain after he injured his right hamstring during Thursday's practice. Coach Byron Scott said he will know Jackson's status today when he receives results from an MRI test performed Thursday.

"The one thing we tried to do with MJ was getting him to Nov. 1," Scott said. "We wanted that more than anything. This came during individual workouts and it's unfortunate but we hope it won't last long."

The Hornets picked up an option on Chris Paul's contract Wednesday, keeping the reigning rookie of the year with the Hornets for at least two more seasons.

Paul averaged 16.1 points and 7.8 assists last season to lead all rookies, and his 175 steals were the most in the NBA.

The Hornets still have an option to pick up the fourth year of Paul's contract for the 2008-09 season.

Stojakovic Has Off-Night In Hornets Debut

Oct 18, 2006 4:46 AM

Hornets' free agent coup Peja Stojakovic scored five points on 2-for-10 shooting in the Hornets' 109-105 loss to the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena.

In his first game since straining his left quadriceps in training camp, Stojakovic logged 24 minutes, primarily with the Hornets' first team.

"Did he make any shots tonight?" asked Hornets assistant coach Darrell Walker, who filled in for ill Coach Byron Scott. "It wasn't a good shooting night for Peja, but there won't be a lot of nights like 2-for-10."

"It felt good just being on the floor," said Stojakovic, a free agent this past offseason. "It's preseason, and I was glad I was able to play without any stiffness or soreness. I know my game is going to come. It's just a matter of me getting a rhythm and a balance."

Hornets' West, Chandler Injure Ankles During Game

Oct 14, 2006 12:27 PM

The New Orleans Hornets lost starters David West and Tyson Chandler to ankle injuries during their preseason game against the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

West, New Orleans' leading scorer and rebounder last season, had scored 17 points for the second straight game before spraining his right ankle and limping to the locker room with 6:07 left in the third quarter. He had played 19 minutes.

Last season, West sprained his left ankle in a preseason game and was hampered by it all season. He still finished second in voting for the NBA's most improved player after averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Chandler, picked up in an offseason trade with Chicago, left 46 seconds into the second half after spraining his left ankle.

The Hornets were already without free-agent signee Peja Stojakovic because of a left quadriceps strain.

Scott: Peja Gets Bad Rap For His Defense

Oct 10, 2006 6:27 AM

A week into training camp, when Hornets Coach Byron Scott was asked if there were any negatives with playing Peja Stojakovic at the two and Desmond Mason at the three -- he succinctly said, "No."

"(On defense), it depends on matchups and who we're playing," Scott said. "Desmond's obviously a better defender, so if you have a two and a three man who are both real good offensively, then it's kind of like pick your poison. It just depends on who I think will do what against certain guys."

"I'll be on the offensive threat," Mason said. "It will be the same guys I've been guarding -- Tracy (McGrady), Kobe (Bryant), Vince (Carter). . . . But me and Peja, we switch anyways, so he'll end up on those guys at times. But they'll be my matchup."

And while Stojakovic isn't necessarily Bruce Bowen on defense, Scott isn't worried.

"Peja does a pretty good job of staying in front of guys, making them shoot over him," said Scott. "He uses that length. He's just smarter. And he knows how to use his height advantage. He's a veteran -- he's been in the league long enough that he knows how to play defense."

Stojakovic may miss tonight's Hornets preseason opener, opting to rest his cramping leg.

Signing West Becomes Hornets' Priority

Oct 8, 2006 4:48 AM

General Manager Jeff Bower has been involved in discussions with forward David West's agent, Lance Young, to finalize a contract extension, The Times Picauyne is reporting.

If an agreement is not reached before the league-mandated Oct. 31 deadline, West would become a restricted free agent next July, eligible to begin negotiations with any team in the league.

If possible, Bower wants to get West locked up now for the next three to four seasons to avoid getting into a bidding war.

"It's a situation where we will continue to have discussions through the remainder of this month," Bower said. "At this point, it's a situation that we're going to deal with privately."

West was runner-up for the league's most improved player award won by Phoenix's Boris Diaw.
