Eight Non-Bubble Teams Interested In Playing Games At Secondary Site

Jun 27, 2020 1:25 PM

The NBA and NBPA are holding discussions about a possible second site for the eight teams not participating in the Orlando restart. The Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors face a scenario where they will go nearly six months without playing a competitive game.

Sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic that there is significant support from most of those eight teams about the concept.

Those eight teams could even play televised games.

The Cavaliers, Pistons and Hawks have been the most vocal among the group in support of the idea. The Knicks have expressed reservations, at least in part because they have a roster with several pending free agents.

One of those teams could serve as host, or they could also play in a city such as Las Vegas or Houston.

Michael Jordan Tells Hornets Players To Call Out Teammates For Mistakes During Practice

Jun 13, 2020 2:35 PM

Michael Jordan told Charlotte Hornets players that they can't be uncomfortable with "calling out teammates" for mistakes during practice during an hour-long video conference call.

"That's going to make you guys even better. You'll bond better. Your team is stronger. There is more of a respect level, instead of not saying anything and letting guys mess up over and over and over again, and you're losing and losing," said Devonte' Graham.

Jordan spoke to the players about the differences between winning in the regular season and the playoffs.

"A lot of guys on our team haven't played in the playoffs and don't understand the attention to detail you have to play with in the playoffs. That was what I enjoyed hearing from MJ, especially as a younger team," said Cody Zeller.

Jordan did admit that his aggressive style of leadership may not work with this current generation.

"One thing with being teammates with guys in this league is you have to learn who they are first. Some people don't like to be confronted in front of others; some people you have to pull aside. So I feel like it is a mixture of learning your teammates and knowing when to call them out ... so that people don't have a bad taste in their mouth about one another," added Terry Rozier.

Malik Monk Reinstated Following Suspension For Violating Anti-Drug Program

Jun 9, 2020 1:34 AM

Malik Monk was reinstated following his suspension for violating the league's anti-drug program.

"Malik is ready to move forward. Obviously we haven't been on the court with him; he's been in our facility, which is a positive, but we welcome him back and we have work to do this summer and I know he's ready to do it," said Hornets head coach James Borrego.

Monk was originally suspended on February 12th.

Monk averaged 10.3 points and 2.9 rebounds this season.

Teams Left Out Of Regular-Season Resumption Propose Regional Mini Summer Leagues, Training Camps

Jun 6, 2020 1:28 AM

A majority of the NBA teams left out of the league's restart of the regular season have proposed putting on their own mini summer leagues and training camps to continue to develop their young players.

The teams, which include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, and New York, could possibly go nine months in between games. There is concern that young, developing players will struggle as they are separated from their teams for an extended period of time.

Several teams have proposed training camps and organized team activities in lieu of regular season games.

The Pistons and Cavs are discussing the possibility of having joint practices, as well as a mini-pod of games.

The teams have presented several ideas to the league, including: mandatory and voluntary workouts in July, regional minicamps in August that include joint practices and three televised games, and for their 2020-21 training camps to start 7-10 days earlier than teams competing in Orlando.

The league said it would work with the teams in question to help reach a solution.

Michael Jordan Influenced NBA In Maximizing Protection For Players, Avoidance Of Gimmicks

Jun 5, 2020 11:09 AM

While Clay Bennett argued for all 30 teams be given the chance to resume their season in order to help small market teams sustain their business, Ramona Shelburne writes that Michael Jordan "made an impassioned plea for the league to invite only the 16 teams currently in the playoff picture keep as close as possible to the traditional format because of the increased risk of injury to players after such a long layoff, and the increased COVID-19 risk that comes with each additional person invited into the bubble."

Jordan, like Bennett, owns a small market franchise.

Adam Silver said the choice he made for 22 teams was guided by the advice of Jordan.

"Once the playoffs start, and this was a point made by Michael Jordan, whose team is not one of the 22 teams [that will play in Orlando], but he is clearly the most respected voice in the room when it comes to basketball. He felt it was very important that after we established the 16 teams, we not get gimmicky. Because there were a lot of proposals on the table to do unique tournaments and do pool play like you see in international competition. And we took many of those proposals very seriously.

"But, ultimately, I agreed with Michael. There's so much chaos in the world right now, even before the racial unrest we are experiencing right now, that let's come as close to normal as we can. And that is top eight in the West, top eight in the East, playing four rounds of seven games. So that is what we intend to do, and our goal is to crown the champion."
