Expected Luxury Tax Teams: Lakers, Heat, Knicks, Nets, Bulls, Celtics

Feb 22, 2013 2:25 PM

The Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and New York Knicks are scheduled to pay the luxury tax this season.

The Bulls have never previously paid the luxury tax and were unable to shed salary at the deadline.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs are less than $1 million away from the tax threshold.

The Warriors traded away Jeremy Tyler and Charles Jenkins on Thursday to get under the tax. Golden State has never paid the luxury tax in franchise history.

The Lakers will have the largest luxury tax bill, as they currently are nearly $30 million over the threshold, while the Celtics are over by less than $1 million.

Rose's Brother Criticizes Bulls' Inability To Improve Roster

Feb 21, 2013 9:16 PM

Reggie Rose, brother of Derrick Rose, criticized the Chicago Bulls for being unable to put enough quality players around him to compete for a title.

Reggie Rose, who stated he was speaking for himself, said it could be a "big factor" in whether his brother returns from his ACL injury this season.

"What have you pieced together? Have you made any moves? Have you made any trades to get better? You know all roads to the championship lead through Miami," Reggie Rose said. "What pieces have you put together for the physical playoffs?

"Joakim Noah is a great player. Luol Deng is a great player. But you need more than that. You have to put together pieces to your main piece. The players can only do so much. It's up to the organization to make them better."

The Bulls didn't make a move in either direction at the deadline, meaning they will pay the tax for the first time.

Update: Derrick Rose released the following statement through the Bulls.

“I have always felt that the Bulls organization’s goals have been the same as mine and that is to bring another championship to this city.”

Derrick Rose Returns To 5-On-5 Scrimmages

Feb 18, 2013 5:08 PM

As scheduled, Derrick Rose participated in five-on-five scrimmages in Chicago Bulls practice on Monday.

"He did what everyone else did, just a normal practice," coach Tom Thibodeau said of Rose, who in interviews last week admitted he was unsure whether he would be ready to play this season.

The Bulls had seven- to eight-minute five-on-five drills in which Rose took part.

"He was able to get out there and it's good," Kirk Hinrich said. "It was something that us as a team needed, as far as every individual coming off the break needed to scrimmage a little bit. And I'm sure it was good for (Rose), helpful to see exactly ... give him a good gauge of where he's at."
