NBA, NBPA Agree To Voluntary Group Workouts In Campus Settings For Teams Not In Restart

Aug 18, 2020 8:38 PM

The NBA and NBPA have reached agreement for the eight teams not involved in the restart in Orlando to conduct voluntary group workouts while residing in campus settings.

There had been discussions about the teams participating in a second bubble with team workouts and scrimmages, but the union had resisted that concept.

The Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks were not invited to participate int he league's restart in Orlando.

The program is scheduled to take place between Sept. 14 and Oct. 6.

Multiple People Within Bulls Describe Jim Boylen's Tenure As 'Toxic'

Aug 18, 2020 1:51 PM

Jim Boylen was elevated to head coach of the Chicago Bulls in December 2018 to replace Fred Hoiberg and his tenure was immediately controversial. While Hoiberg had a laid back approach, Boylen operated like an old school college coach. The Bulls wanted a coach who would hold players accountable, but Boylen never could accomplish that feat outside of public lashings.

Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic writes that Boylen's "two-year tenure was described by multiple people within the organization as toxic." It was described by one person as a "nightmare" and another as "a circus."

Boylen had contentious relationships with multiple players.

Arturas Karnisovas insists Boylen was not fired due to his attitude or antics.

“It was strictly a basketball decision,” Karnisovas said in some fashion seven times during his 15-minute conference call with local reporters Friday.

Eight Non-Restart Teams Discuss In-Market Bubble Program In September

Aug 14, 2020 1:01 PM

The eight teams excluded from the NBA's restart in Orlando continue to discuss with the league office and NBPA how they can conduct workouts or scrimmages, sources tell ESPN.

The most likely outcome remains in-market workouts starting in September. There had been discussions of a second bubble with those teams playing scrimmages.

Many of those teams want to get players back in their practice facility during a long hiatus.

The teams would test daily, have one week of individual workouts, two weeks of group practices and one hour of five-on-five per day.

Bulls Fire Jim Boylen As Head Coach

Aug 14, 2020 10:35 AM

The Chicago Bulls have fired Jim Boylen as head coach.

Arturas Karnisovas will get to install his own coach as he inherited Boylen from the previous regime.

Kenny Atkinson, Wes Unseld Jr., Adrian Griffin and Darvin Ham are considered candidates for the job.

Boylen replaced Fred Hoiberg on an interim basis during the 18-19 season and then was given the job on a permanent basis.

“After doing a comprehensive evaluation and giving the process the time it deserved, I ultimately decided that a fresh approach and evolution in leadership was necessary," said Arturas Karnisovas. "This was a very difficult decision, but it is time for our franchise to take that next step as we move in a new direction and era of Chicago Bulls basketball. Jim is a great human being that cares deeply about this organization and the game of basketball. I want to thank him for his professionalism and commitment to the franchise.”

NBPA Won't Consider Sending Eight Non-Restart Teams To Orlando For Minicamp

Aug 9, 2020 1:01 PM

The NBPA has no interest in having the NBA send the eight teams left out of the original restart to Orlando for an offseason training camp once the first group of 22 games are eliminated, sources tell ESPN.

The concept is a non-starter for the union.

The only viable solution is for the NBA and NBPA to agree to voluntary workouts in the team facilities.

Several of the teams are frustrated and angry over how far they feel they're falling behind the teams in restart.

"We are looking at nine months between games now, and if the season is delayed, we are looking at possibly a full year between competitive games," one GM told ESPN on Friday. "That's unprecedented in the history of the sport. We deserve help here."

NBA Considering Bringing Eight Non-Restart Teams To Orlando

Aug 7, 2020 11:06 AM

The NBA is considering the possibility of bringing the eight teams who didn't participate in the restart to Orlando for a minicamp and scrimmages, sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic

Six teams will leave Orlando at the end of the restart and the beginning of the playoffs.

The NBPA has been skeptical of any basketball setting that doesn't replicate the conditions the NBA created in Orlando.

The first round will begin on August 17th with the start of the second round and the addition of family members beginning on September 1st.

Bulls Likely To Retain Jim Boylen Due To Financial Concerns

Aug 6, 2020 3:53 PM

There is growing momentum that the Chicago Bulls will retain Jim Boylen as head coach for the 20-21 season due to financial concerns from the Reinsdorfs, sources tell Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley had previously begun to reach out through back channels to potential candidates such as Ime Udoka and Adrian Griffin. Karnisovas and Eversley received some negative feedback on Boylen from key Bulls players.

The Bulls are valued at $3.2 billion and Boylen is owed just $1.6 million as one of the NBA's lowest paid head coaches.

A sources says Boylen is confident he will retain his job and he believes he will also prove that he's the right coach for the Bulls.

Eight Eliminated Teams Considered Unlikely To Have Minicamp, Scrimmages

Aug 4, 2020 3:39 PM

The eight franchises that weren't included in the NBA's restart in Orlando now are pessimistic about the odds of a second site being created for minicamps and intrasquad scrimmages. There is also pessimism about even in-market minicamps for group workouts.

“There’s nothing happening,” one general manager told The Athletic after a Tuesday call between the eight GMs and league officials. “It’s a shame. It’s a huge detriment to these eight franchises that were left behind.”

Sources say the National Basketball Players Association remains concerned about the safety concerns that would come with creating another location for the other eight teams to compete (Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Minnesota, Cleveland, Golden State).

NBPA prefers the idea of having in-market bubbles for individual team minicamps.

The 20-21 season has a tentative training camp start date of Nov. 10th.
