LeBron Shows Off New Tattoos

Aug 28, 2006 12:38 AM

LeBron James has two new tattoos that are making their first appearance while he plays for Team U.S.A. in Japan.

On his right calf is the word ``Witness,'' a reference to the Nike campaign during the playoffs. Also, on his right arm, below his elbow, is a large ``330,'' a reference to his hometown area code, with four stars around it.

``I got some things to debut to the fans,'' James said.

Team U.S.A. Advances With 103-58 Win Over Senegal

Aug 24, 2006 12:21 PM

Dwyane Wade rose to acknowledge the crowd chanting his name with 4 minutes left, the only time he got off the bench as the United States routed Senegal 103-58 Thursday to advance to the second round of the world championships.

Wade had the night off, after helping the U.S. rally a day earlier in the win against Italy.

The NBA finals MVP for the Heat stood and waved, drawing a loud roar.

"That was a first for me," Wade said. "It was a great experience, though. We play our heart out here to entertain. We gained some fans on this trip."

Chris Bosh scored 20 points and LeBron James added 17 in limited duty for the U.S. team, which remained unbeaten.

The Group D champions depart Friday morning for Saitama, where they will face Australia on Sunday in the round of 16.

LeBron Taking Mandarin Chinese Lessons

Aug 22, 2006 12:26 PM

By playing for Team USA, not only does LeBron James get to play international basketball at a high level, but he also gets to market himself directly to a lucrative region of the world.

``It is only going to help my business,'' James said. ``Once I knew the world games were going to be in Japan, I knew I was going to be on board.''

James is also taking Mandarin Chinese lessons with the goal of being able to conduct interviews in that language by 2008.

Cavaliers Interested In Adding David Wesley

Aug 21, 2006 1:46 PM

With the signing of free agent Drew Gooden, the Cavaliers will have a full roster of 16 players.

After adding center Scot Pollard on Friday, there's still some tinkering to be done with the roster. Plus, the Cavaliers still plan on inviting veteran combo guard David Wesley to training camp if a deal can be worked out.

"We have some things we can do," Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said. "From there, we'll sit back and see what happens."

If Wesley is added, that would give them 17 players.

Gooden's Contract Is Front-Loaded

Aug 20, 2006 5:12 AM

A source confirmed Drew Gooden's contract is front-loaded, according to The Morning News.

It could be worth as much as $8 million the first year and go down in value in the final two years.

The reason it's front-loaded is to ease the Cavaliers' possible hit in the luxury tax next summer. However, they'll still probably have to pay a tax, especially with forward Anderson Varejao entering free agency and James' lucrative contract extension kicking in.

A source said Gooden's base contract is worth $21 million. Incentives could push it as high as $24 million.

The Cavaliers still have some wiggle room to get out of paying the tax, but they'd have to dump some high-priced salaries to get under the threshold. They have almost $67 million in salaries committed for next year, not counting Varejao's new deal. He could earn as much as $6 million or $7 million a season next summer, one agent said.

Cavs Won't Pick Up Luke Jackson's Option

Aug 20, 2006 5:10 AM

With the impending signing of Drew Gooden and the addition of Scot Pollard, the Cavaliers have 16 players under contract.  The team is also hoping to sign guard David Wesley, meaning that they will have to trim some players from their roster.

The most likely cuts will be newly acquired guard Eddie Basden and guard Stephen Graham, both of whom have unguaranteed deals.

However, the Cavaliers like Graham and would prefer to part with the likes of Ira Newble, Luke Jackson or Sasha Pavlovic, although team sources say no trades are in the works for any of these players.

The Morning News reports that the team not pick up Jackson's fourth-year option by Oct. 31, making him an unrestricted free agent at the season's end.

Bulls And Cavaliers Complete Trade

Aug 18, 2006 2:24 PM

The Chicago Bulls today acquired center Martynas Andriuskevicius from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for guard Eddie Basden.

Martynas Andriuskevicius, a 7-2, 240-pound center, appeared in six games with the Cavaliers during his rookie season.  He also appeared in 15 games with the Arkansas RimRockers of the NBA Development League and averaged 7.0 ppg and 4.2 rpg in 18.9 mpg.  The 20-year old native of Kaunas, Lithuania was originally selected in the second round (44th overall) of NBA Draft 2005 by Orlando.  He was then traded to Cleveland for a second-round pick and cash considerations on June 29, 2005.

?Martynas is a young big that we view as a player who needs development with his strength and skill, but has the potential to make it in this league,? said Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson.  ?We are always looking for size and skill, and feel he is a young player that we are willing to take a strong look at.?

Cavaliers Close To Deal With Scot Pollard

Aug 18, 2006 11:47 AM

The Cavaliers are close to signing free agent big man Scot Pollard, the Akron Beacon-Journal is reporting.

The team is waiting for some results of a physical before completing the deal, which is believed to be for one year.

Pollard, a 6-foot-11, 265-pounder, has a relationship with Cavs coach Mike Brown. The two spent two seasons together with the Indiana Pacers, where Pollard learned Brown's complex defensive system.

If the deal goes through, they would have one roster spot remaining, with Rocket guard David Wesley believed to be considered for that position.
