Andre Drummond Likely To Opt-In For Next Season, Cavs Also Willing To Use Mid-Level Exception

Sep 26, 2020 4:09 PM

Andre Drummond is likely to exercise his player option for next season worth $28.7 million, sources told Chris Fedor of cleveland.com.

Drummond is not currently attending the Cavs' voluntary workouts, though he remains engaged with the team.

Fedor adds that while the Cavs want to stay out of the luxury tax, they are willing to use their mid-level exception if a player is deemed "worth it."

The MLE will be worth $8-$10 million depending on where the cap falls for next season.

Koby Altman had also expressed interest in re-signing Tristan Thompson depending on cap space.

Koby Altman Says There's 'Mutual Interest' In Keeping Tristan Thompson

Sep 26, 2020 1:32 PM

Koby Altman said that there was "mutual interest" in the Cleveland Cavaliers re-signing Tristan Thompson.

“I think it’s fair to say there’s mutual interest for sure. He’s been with this franchise his entire career since we drafted him. He’s won a championship here.

"Obviously, he means a lot to the players on the team right now, but it has to make sense. There are some events coming up -- the draft, free agency -- where we have to see if it makes sense for him. He’s earned the right to be an unrestricted free agent and explore opportunities at this point in his career," said Altman.

The 29-year-old Thompson is an unrestricted free agent.

A source added that he was "50-50" on returning to the Cavs, though those odds have increased with the uncertainty surrounding next season's cap.

Thompson is currently one of four Cavs players not attending voluntary workouts.
