Harrington: Golden State Was The Best Situation

Nov 30, 2006 12:57 PM

Baron Davis was probably the person who was the most upset about the Warriors losing out to the Pacers on Al Harrington.

"BD was with me in Vegas the whole time, so he was there every step of the way," Harrington said. "Obviously, he was very upset about it, but he understood. One thing I can say about (Warriors executive vice president Chris) Mullin is that he tried.

"If they wouldn't have gotten the sign-and-trade done, I probably would have wound up here, because this was the best situation at that time," Harrington said.

Don Nelson had no interest in discussing another milestone he's about to add to his coaching resume.

On Wednesday night, he could become only the second coach in NBA history to reach 1,200 victories when his Warriors host the Pacers. Lenny Wilkens has the career record for wins with 1,332.

O'Bryant Declines D-League Option

Nov 28, 2006 4:29 AM

Golden State's first round pick, Patrick O'Bryant has not been receiving much playing time, so Don Nelson offered the center a choice Monday: Take on extra practice duties with assistant Russell Turner, or prepare to join the Bakersfield Jam, Golden State's affiliate in the NBA Development League.

Not surprisingly, O'Bryant went for the former.

``He said, `What would you rather do, go down to D-League or stay here and just work with Russ?' '' O'Bryant said. ``And I said, `Well, I'd rather stay here working with Russ.' He's one of the winningest coaches ever, he's got to know what he's talking about.''

Nelson: "Tonight The Basketball Gods Were Looking Down On Us"

Nov 26, 2006 2:24 AM

Matt Barnes said the Jazz weren't ready for what the Warriors had for them defensively. The NBA's best team probably wasn't ready for Barnes, either.

Making just his second start of the season in place of ailing Mickael Pietrus, Barnes scored a career-high 24 points, including 17 in the third quarter, to lead Golden State to a 91-78 victory on Saturday night.

"We had to try something new to cover one of the hottest teams in the league," coach Don Nelson said. "Who would have ever thought ... we'd be able to come in here and beat the best team in the West? Tonight the basketball gods were looking down on us."

Davis missed the Phoenix game on Monday night because of soreness, but tried to come back against Denver two nights later. Davis played 34 minutes and scored 21 points in the loss.

Potentially Arthritic Knee Kept Teams Away From Ellis

Nov 24, 2006 11:16 AM

Monta Ellis was projected to be a top-20 pick in the 2005 NBA draft until questions about his surgically repaired knee began to surface.

The Nuggets passed on him three times and an NBA source said he failed a physical with them, leading the club to fear his left knee may eventually become arthritic.

Nelson Trying To Be Constructive In His Criticism

Nov 23, 2006 2:23 AM

Don Nelson's Warriors are loaded with young players, so he realizes that he must offer criticsm in a constructive way.

``I've got to be careful,'' Nelson said before Wednesday's game against Denver. `` I don't want to get too hard on them. They need coaching, but I have to watch myself because I get emotionally involved in the game to the point that I've got to understand that they're young and they're going to make mistakes. The veteran players, I don't expect them to make mistakes.''

Team USA Snub Motivates Baron

Nov 21, 2006 1:41 PM

Baron Davis was very serious about being left off the list of invitees to the Team U.S.A. training camp this past summer in Las Vegas.

"When they were participating in their games and their practices, I wanted to make sure I was doing the same thing," said Davis, who was passed over in favor of such guards as Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards, Chauncey Billups of the Detroit Pistons, Chris Paul of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets and Luke Ridnour of the Seattle SuperSonics. "I knew that some of the top guys in the league were practicing hard and getting good games in, so I wanted to try to practice and work at that level, just as if I was on the team.

"It takes a lot to get back to where I belong.

"It's something that I would have liked to make, but my focus every season is to concentrate on the season," Davis said. "That's everything that matters."
