Warriors Could Explore Trading David Lee Before Deadline

Feb 17, 2015 3:15 PM

The Golden State Warriors will almost certainly find themselves paying the luxury tax next season unless they unload David Lee's $15 million salary.

Ownership hasn't said a deal to trad away Lee has to be found before the deadline as they don't want to upset the team's current chemistry.

But there are teams interested in working with the Warriors on a deal involving Lee that would see them attach assets along with his contract before the deadline.

The Warriors will have Klay Thompson on the first season of his new contract, as well as the anticipated new deal for Draymond Green.

Myers: Warriors' Decision To Extend Stephen Curry Was Difficult

Feb 16, 2015 2:35 PM

Stephen Curry has one of the NBA's most team-friendly contracts, but his four-year, $44 million deal in 2012 was a hard decision at the time for the Golden State Warriors.

Curry was coming off a string of ankle injuries.

The Warriors have given extensions to Andrew Bogut and Klay Thompson in each of the subsequent years.

"It never gets talked about, but Curry’s extension wasn’t as easy as everybody says. Bogut’s extension. Klay’s. All these deals we’ve done that I think have worked… You pay a player in the NBA, they’re guaranteed.

"Curry, he’s been–knock on wood–extremely healthy. (But) when we did that deal, he wasn’t. And a lot of people felt, ‘Why are you doing this now?’

"Sometimes the scariest decisions you make are the ones where you’re committing to a player. And people would look at those and say, ‘Those were easy.’ Those weren’t easy decisions.

"Klay might’ve been the easiest decision and you would’ve never thought that. But paying players… you’re putting yourself out there, especially with the injury risk.

"Committing to the players in the organization, which I think we felt really good about because of the character of those guys… a lot of the reasons why teams suffer in the NBA is because you commit salary to players that aren’t worth it and become immovable."

Warriors Feared Stephen Curry Might Need Ankle Reconstruction In 2012

Feb 12, 2015 1:39 PM

Stephen Curry was plagued by chronic ankle injuries during his first few seasons in the NBA.

Following the 11-12 season, there was a serious concern that Curry may need full reconstruction of the ankle.

Octagon's Jeff Austin, remembers it — "hadn't really been done on that type of athlete" and might have forever changed his career.

Dr. Richard Ferkel found no structural damage and wound up cleaning out loose debris and scar tissue. Curry would be back within three to four months. Later that day, the Golden State Warriors issued a statement that offered only subtle hints about the significance of it all.

"The surgery went about as well as we could have hoped for entering the procedure," Ferkel said in the statement. "We were pleased that the surgery was limited to simply a cleaning out procedure and I anticipate that he'll be ready before the start of training camp."
