Dwight: Harden And I Aren't Super Close But We Talk

Mar 28, 2015 2:32 PM

Dwight Howard disputes comments from Kobe Bryant that he was uncomfortable with Bryant's "combative" approach during their one season together.

“It wasn’t that I was uncomfortable with who [Bryant] was as a player or a person, that was never the issue to me,” Howard said. “I think that kind of gets twisted because of how things ended up. Everybody on that team got injured. I think we had five games together before somebody was injured. …  I didn’t have an issue back then how Kobe was. Kobe wanted to win as badly as I did. Our personalities are different. I’m not a guy who is going to go off on my teammates. I tried that approach and for me it didn’t work. For Kobe, it works. He’s won a couple championships. He’s also played with some great talent. For the most part, it just wasn’t the time for us to win.”

Howard was asked if his relationship with Bryant has informed how he and James Harden get along.

“We’re not super close but we do talk, we sit down, we have conversations,” Howard said of Harden. “I’ve never had any issue with James. The biggest reason for me to come to Houston was to play alongside James. I knew I made [the right decision] when I first made it, watching him play and now how he’s grown as a player and a person. It’s great to watch. I came to win. There’s no ego with me, it’s not about me. It’s about us, what we can do together. I’ve won all the individual awards, besides the MVP, and at this point all that stuff is irrelevant. What’s more important is us coming together to win a championship."

Mar 26, 2015 12:49 PM

Dwight Howard returned to the Houston Rockets for the first time since Jan. 23 in their 95-93 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

“My whole point was to do whatever I can to help this team win and play as hard as I can for as long as I can,” Howard said. “It just felt good being back out on the floor.”

Howard played just over 16 minutes after two months of rehab on his knee.

Howard had four points and seven rebounds.

“I felt pretty good,” Howard said. “It seemed like as soon as I got out there, it was time to sit down. It was an adjustment period for me. I’m just happy to be back out there playing.”

Dwight Howard Close To Return From Resting Knee

Mar 18, 2015 4:57 PM

Dwight Howard believes he's "close" to returning to the Houston Rockets' lineup.

Howard has missed 23 games to rest his right knee and went through a full practice earlier this week.

“I have been feeling pretty good,” Howard said on Wednesday. “I had some pretty good days of practice this week.”

Howard says his workouts over the last few weeks have been some of the toughest of his career.

“We did some extremely tough workouts on the treadmill,” Howard said. “Any time anyone says ‘treadmill,’ I lose it because I don’t think anyone understands what they had me doing on the treadmill. I was just begging them, ‘Can I play so I cannot have to do this?’  Rehab is harder than  the actual practice and all that stuff so the treadmill, I hate that word. I bought a treadmill and I am thinking about getting rid of it because of all the stuff they have had me do.

“After that, they had me start doing court workouts and even the court workouts were intense. We did some in Portland and a lot of the guys wanted to join in. They did a couple sets then were like, ‘Nah, this is pretty intense.’”

Howard's main goal is to be ready for the playoffs.

“I will be back when I feel I am in the best shape but also my body is healthy enough to play and maintain myself,” he said. “I know a lot of people want me to play and I want me to play as badly as anybody but the important thing is to make sure this doesn’t happen again because we want to make a deep push in the playoffs this year and I can’t afford to miss any playoff games.”
