Miami Dismisses Approximately 30 Staff Members Who Sold Season Tickets

Jul 30, 2010 6:30 PM

In an effort to cut costs, the Miami Heat terminated all of its staff dedicated to selling season-ticket packages for the team.

The Heat dominated this summer's NBA free agency by signing LeBron James and Chris Bosh, while retaining Dwyane Wade.

Soon thereafter, the team sold out all of its season-ticket inventory and now has a waiting list with approximately 6,000 names.

About 30 staff members were dismissed from their employment with the Heat.

Bosh Claims Decision To Leave Toronto Came Late

Jul 30, 2010 7:22 AM

After being called a quitter by Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, Chris Bosh says he always played hard for Toronto.

Bosh, who left for the Heat earlier this month, responded to allegations made by Colangelo on Toronto radio station FAN 590 that claimed the All-Star was "checked out" late last season and chose not to play some of the Raptors' final games.

"I play this game as hard as I can every time I step on the court," Bosh said. "On the back of my jersey it says 'Bosh' ... The Boshes are hard workers. We have a lot of pride in what we do, in our jobs and in life."

He also claimed his decision to leave Toronto came at the end of a long process and was not something he had committed to before the offseason.

"Everybody thinks, 'Oh, he was gone as soon as the season was over,' " he said. "It was the hardest decision I ever had to make. As different as another country is, it was still home for me. I had been there for seven years."

Prokhorov Expresses Support Of LeBron's Decision In Open Letter

Jul 29, 2010 8:35 PM

Mikhail Prokhorov, owner of the Nets, sent the following letter to the USA Today.

'The players are signed, the "Decision" is made, but the passions around this year's extraordinary class of NBA free agents refuses to die down. What surprises me is the amount of negative commentary directed at the three top free agents (especially LeBron James) who decided to play on the same team and to create a great franchise together. Of course, any club owner dreams of having those players, including me, but all questions of how the announcements were made aside, I respect their choice, and no one has the right to judge them.

I want to say that I support LeBron, the best athlete in the NBA. He had a truly difficult choice to make. Any move he made was sure to be viewed as wrong, and to leave many unhappy fans. Basing his decision on achieving results on the basketball court shows that the sportsman won the day, not the showman or the businessman. What is wrong with that?

We are seeing the birth of a new, dynamic team with such star players, and all of us can await the new season with great anticipation. I wish them success and give them my moral support. I will be happy for us to beat the Miami Heat in the conference finals, maybe not this season, but in the very near future.'

House Signs Two-Year Deal With Heat

Jul 29, 2010 1:47 PM

Eddie House has agreed to a two-year contract with the Miami Heat, agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed Thursday.

House will receive about $2.8 million over two seasons, which is the veterans' exception. There is a player option in the second season.

``It's just a great fit,'' Bartelstein said. ``This guy had a great relationship with the Heat before. And he's still one of the most dynamic guys coming off the bench at hitting big shots in big moments. He's the best in the league at what he does.''

Colangelo Hints Bosh Checked Out On Raptors

Jul 27, 2010 7:49 AM

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo had some pointed comments to make about Chris Bosh during an interview with Toronto's FAN 590 on Monday.

Bosh left for the Heat in free agency, although the Raptors were able to work a sign-and-trade for some long-term assets.

"We tried in vain to put pieces around Chris. Different pieces, different styles. It didn't work out," Colangelo said of building a roster around his former cornerstone.

"No matter what type of player we brought in, it didn't seem to have the right mix with him as that centerpiece."

Colangelo also hinted that Bosh checked out on the team near the end of the 2009-10 season, knowing his career in Toronto was likely over.

"Despite limited swelling and any excessive damage on an MRI, he felt like he needed to sit for six more games ... I'm not even questioning Chris' injury. I'm telling you he was cleared to play subject to tolerance on his part, and the tolerance just apparently wasn't there and he chose not to play," Colangelo continued.

"The fact that our season was spiraling downward and we were hoping he'd come back sooner and we were also dealing with a few other things at that point ... we were really struggling there."

Colangelo didn't stop there.

"Whether he was mentally checked out or just wasn't quite into it down the stretch, he wasn't the same guy. I think everybody saw that, but no one wanted to acknowledge it," he continued.

"At the same time, I never felt we were quite in the game (in terms of signing Bosh to a new contract). There was too much out there, too much built up for him to take an easy out here, and he decided to do that."

Marbury Claims He Never Turned Down Heat

Jul 26, 2010 8:10 AM

Stephon Marbury told the New York Post on Sunday that he didn't turn down a chance to play for the Heat.

In fact, Marbury still hasn't given up hope on playing for Miami.

Marbury said a Chinese reporter mixed up the translation of his remarks and that it was falsely reported he had rejected an offer from the Heat.

He told the Post that Miami contacted him in early July before LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh joined forces. The Heat told him they would get back to him after "they handled all the things they had to handle."

"It's total nonsense, why would I turn down a chance to play for the Miami Heat?" Marbury said. "The report was a fabrication."

Marbury's point to the Chinese journalist was that a point guard is not essential on the team because James and Wade handle the ball so much.

"What I was saying was I wouldn't be making a major difference with those guys because they have great players," Marbury said.

"I'd just be filling a smaller role. Miami was considering bringing me there. They told me they'd get back to me. I haven't heard back."

Rondo Fears Lakers Over Heat

Jul 25, 2010 10:30 AM

Rajon Rondo doesn't agree with those that are already expecting the Heat to win the 2011 NBA championship.

"They should be good, but they ain't done nothing yet," Rondo said recently. "They ain't done nothing.

"What is there to be nervous for?" he said. "I'm worried about L.A. That's the team we need to beat. Miami looks really good on paper, and I'm sure they're going to be really good. But they still have to come together as a team. I'm not saying they won't, but who knows if those guys can jell?

"Our biggest opponent each night is ourselves ? that's how I look at it. Not to be cocky or anything, but that's how we honestly feel. We are the defending [Eastern] champs. Once the first game of the regular season starts, that's irrelevant. But we are going to go into training camp looking to get back to the Finals and win it."

Rondo says it will all depend on how quickly Miami's three superstars are able to gel.

"It depends on those three guys [James, Wade and Bosh] in particular, how they accept their roles," Rondo said. "Things aren't going to go each guy's particular way. It's going to be about how they handle it as gentlemen."
