Blazers Seek Interview With Kupchak

Apr 19, 2012 7:29 PM

The Blazers have interest in interviewing Mitch Kupchak for their general manager vacancy.

Kupchak took over the head job with the Lakers in 2000, but Jim Buss is now the head decision-maker.

Sources close to the situation said Kupchak's latest contract with the Lakers is a lucrative multiyear deal.

Some close to Kupchak believe he would be interested in opportunities outside of the Lakers.

Matthews To Play On Blazers' Summer League Team

Apr 19, 2012 12:50 PM

Wesley Matthews plans on playing in the Vegas Summer League, a rarity for a player on a long-term contract.

“I’m playing. I’m playing. Dead serious,’’ Matthews said.

Mathews is widely regarded as the hardest working member of the Blazers.

“That’s not a surprise,’’ acting GM Chad Buchanan said. “Wes is striving to get better all the time. I love it. In the history of the NBA, I can’t imagine too many guys of his stature requesting to play in Summer League. That tells you a lot about him.’’

“He said he wants to play in two or three games, practices ... just be around the team,’’ Matthews' agent Lance Young said. “I said ‘all right.’ He’s going to be playing pick up games anyway.’’

Pacers, Suns, Blazers, Mavericks Interested In Eric Gordon

Apr 13, 2012 11:10 AM

Eric Gordon has enjoyed his time with New Orleans, though he has been limited to just five games this season.

Gordon will be a restricted free agent this summer after his agent, Rob Pelinka, and the Hornets were unsuccessful in their attempt to negotiate an extension.

"The first thing I'd say is that we have a very underrated coach," Gordon said by phone on Tuesday. "He's one of the best coaches out there, and we're definitely an underrated team. I know our record [16-42] doesn't speak for itself, but I've been out more than half the season. The Hornets really do have good fans, too. I really can't say too many negatives about it.

"Overall, it's better than what people probably would think if they hadn't lived here. It's been enjoyable."

The Hornets will be able to match any offer Gordon receives on the open market.

"We want him here for the long term; we're looking forward to signing him this summer," Hornets general manager Dell Demps told SI.com. "We think he is a big-time player who can score, and we're thrilled to have him. He's a big part of our plans for the future."

Sources close to the situation said Indiana, Phoenix, Portland and Dallas are among the teams with interest in Gordon.

Joel Freeland Declines To Estimate NBA Arrival

Apr 12, 2012 4:42 PM

Joel Freeland is still eyeing a move to the NBA, but that time has not arrived.

"I just want to be here in Malaga," said Freeland, who averages 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds for Unicaja Malaga of the Spanish ACB.

"I don't want to make specific deadlines,” Freeland added. “When I'm ready, I'll take that step. But I have a lot to learn."

Portland still holds the rights to Freeland after selecting the 25-year-old big man with 30th pick of the 2006 NBA draft.
