Jackson cleared to play

Feb 14, 2003 7:44 AM

Martin McNeal of the Sacramento Bee reports: Thursday morning, Kings guard Bobby Jackson had an X-Ray done on his left hand and it came back negative.

Yesterday, Jackson participated in a full scrimmage and proclaimed himself ready to play against the Seattle SuperSonics tonight at Arco Arena.

"I felt pretty good out there (Thursday)," Jackson said. "It was all right. Getting worked out hard by Elston and T.P. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday helped a lot. I didn't feel that burn in my lungs. ... I felt it earlier in the week going against those guys."

However, just because he believes that he is ready to play, doesn't mean head coach Rick Adelman will feel the same way.

It was a week after Mike Bibby said he could play that Adelman actually let him.

"He really needs to practice two or three times," Adelman said Wednesday. "But you know, he's been sitting out a long time. And I told him we have more plays than just the one he likes to run, so we've got to get him out on the practice court.

Jackson has been out since Christmas Day when he broke a bone in his hand against the Lakers.

Webber might be back next week

Feb 11, 2003 9:28 AM

Martin McNeal of the Sacramento Bee reports: Sacramento Kings forward Chris Webber could be back as soon as next week.

Webber has been out since last month with a sprained left ankle.

Kings Head coach Rick Adelman said Webber went through the team's shooting drills and then shot more before receiving treatment. He likely will not play this week, but barring setbacks, the initial three-week projection from Jan. 28, when he was injured, could prove accurate.

A team source hinted that Webber could return for the Feb. 18 game against Milwaukee, the Feb. 20 game against Boston or the Feb. 23 game against New York.

"Webb moved better than I expected him to," a relieved Adelman said.

Adelman also said guard Bobby Jackson and forward Lawerence Funderburke could be available Sunday when the Kings host San Antonio.

Jackson will have X-rays taken Thursday morning, and if they come back OK and Jackson practices a couple times, he could return against the Spurs. Adelman said Monday night was the first time Funderburke has been on the court in weeks, but the prospects for his return also looked encouraging.

Contraversy aside, Stojakovic 3 point king again

Feb 9, 2003 5:13 AM

Peja Stojakovic was able to win his second consecutive 3 point championship yesterday when he defeated Wesley Person of the Grizzlies, but the contest was not without its own contraversy.

Stojakovic went first in the final and started out hot, but at the top of the key the time over buzzer sounded which caused the champ to hesitate, Peja not able to regain his momentum from that point.  The shootout had gone into extra time after Stojakovic and Person were both tied on 20, and the rules for over the time shootouts in the final had changed from last season.

"That buzzer, it kind of threw me off," said Stojakovic. "I'm glad that they realized (the mistake) so I got a chance to go again."

Sonics' Mason still fuming over trash talk

Feb 1, 2003 9:02 AM

Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Gary Payton are just three of the greatest trash talkers to grace an NBA court, but could we soon be adding Sacramento reserve Damone Jones to the list?

Seattle's Desmond Mason is still fuming over a comment made by Jones during the King's win over the Supersonics on Thursday night.  At the time Mason was so annoyed at the comments that he was actually ejected along with Jones in the game's final minute.

"I'm standing at the free-throw line after (Gerald) Wallace had passed up a shot a minute earlier and Damon yells at him 'You've got to make that shot. You're not Desmond Mason. You can make it,' " Mason said.

"It surprised me. I was upset. He had pretty much just came into the game and I hadn't said anything to him. He just starts running his mouth and he hasn't done anything. Then he said it again, loud enough to make sure I heard, so Ansu (Sesay) tells him to leave it alone and they start getting into it.

"I tried to let it go and he wouldn't shut up. The refs just let it go on, so I just went and handled it myself, which I kind of regret."

"My family and friends were watching and so was the league," Mason said. "I don't play that way. That's not me. I carry myself better than that. I don't talk. I've been trashed before and it doesn't bother me.

"When I came into the league Eddie Jones got on me after I looked at the ref when I was called for a foul when he was going in for a layup. It was weak. He told me 'Don't say nothin', rook. It's an All-Star call and you haven't done anything in this league.'

"That was cool. I respect him. But this is a guy who came in when the game was pretty much over and he just started talking. If it was Peja Stojakovich or Doug Christie, I probably would have laughed it off.

"If I had to do it all over I'd just walk away. He was going to get (a technical foul) and I got caught saying something back to him."
