Paxson Close To Making An Offer To Songalia

Aug 27, 2005 8:49 PM

The Bulls' pursuit of restricted free agent Darius Songaila continues, and it hardly will be a surprise if the 6-foot-8-inch power forward gets an offer soon from general manager John Paxson.

Songaila visited Paxson at the Berto Center on Wednesday, but several teams remain interested in the Lithuanian who averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds last season for Sacramento.

The Kings are unlikely to match an offer.

Songaila Could Soon Join Bulls

Aug 26, 2005 5:04 AM

The Sacramento Kings will not match an offer sheet given to restricted free agent Darius Songaila, according to numerous league sources.

Kings general manager Geoff Petrie even suggested to the Sacramento Bee that his team?s roster is complete, except for the future addition of a low-cost 13th man.

?The roster we have at the moment, the way it?s comprised, are the guys who will play all the minutes,? Petrie said.

If that?s the case, Songaila appears headed to the Bulls. Before finishing a two-day visit to the Berto Center on Thursday, the 6-foot-9 forward spent time checking out real estate, according to one source.

The Bulls could sign Songaila to an offer sheet using their remaining salary-cap exception (worth either $1.7 million or $2.2 million) but may spend a few more days trying to orchestrate a three-team deal that would allow them to pay Songaila a higher salary.

In theory, the Bulls could send shooting guard Eric Piatkowski to a team with salary-cap room or a trade exception.

Sacramento would get a draft pick in the deal and the Bulls could pay Songaila a starting salary of up to $3.85 million. The chances of that happening, however, may be remote.

Petrie Doesn't Expect To Match Evans' Detroit Offer

Aug 25, 2005 9:43 AM

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, said Wednesday the team is unlikely to match the offer sheet that Maurice Evans signed with the Pistons.

In reality, the Kings don't have bargaining power. Their mid-level exception is gone, and they don't have much spare money left under the salary cap.

Kings' Songaila Visits Chicago

Aug 25, 2005 6:23 AM

Sacramento forward Darius Songaila visited the Berto Center on Wednesday to meet with Bulls general manager John Paxson and the coaching staff.

Songaila is a restricted free agent and it?s unclear whether the Bulls plan to sign him to an offer sheet or try to negotiate a trade with the Kings. Complicating matters is the fact that Sacramento?s payroll is already above the luxury-tax threshold, so the Kings do not want to take on any players in return.

?We?re going to pursue this (the Bulls? interest) and hopefully it will work itself out,? said Songaila?s agent, Mark Bartelstein.

The Bulls could sign Songaila to an offer sheet using their remaining salary-cap exception (most likely worth $2.2 million) and hope the Kings don?t match. But they could not send a draft pick to Sacramento in exchange for the 27-year-old native of Lithuania without giving up an equal salary in return.

Bartelstein raised the possibility of involving a third team that has a trade exception available as a way to send Sacramento a draft pick, but he is not sure how things will play out. The Bulls are willing to include shooting guard Eric Piatkowski, who will make $3 million next season, in a trade.

Kings Sign Abdur-Rahim

Aug 12, 2005 8:27 PM

The Sacramento Kings signed forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim on Friday, three days after a deal sending him from Portland to New Jersey fell through.

The Nets rescinded their trade with the Trail Blazers on Tuesday, claiming the nine-year veteran's right knee had failed physical exams. The Kings wasted no time reasserting their interest in Abdur-Rahim, quickly closing what's believed to be a one-year deal for the NBA's midlevel salary cap exception, worth about $5 million.

Abdur-Rahim has averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in a career with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. The veteran forward has never reached the playoffs -- but that seems likely to change with the Kings, who added him to a starting lineup that now could be one of the NBA's strongest.

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, moved swiftly to complete the latest move in his yearlong makeover of the franchise, which has parted ways with Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Doug Christie, Cuttino Mobley and Bobby Jackson since last summer. With Abdur-Rahim in town, Maurice Evans and Darius Songaila now are likely to leave as free agents.

Kings Closing In On Shareef

Aug 11, 2005 9:20 PM

While Shareef Abdur-Rahim's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said there are three teams still in the running, it's clear the Kings remain in front and a deal could be made soon.

"We're moving forward to get a deal done with Sacramento," Goodwin said. "We're looking at hopefully getting something done tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday."

Goodwin, however, would not call his client King Abdur-Rahim just yet, not surprising since the player was headed to New Jersey until a sign-and-trade with Portland collapsed on Tuesday.

"I've been at this 19 years, and a done deal is not a done deal until it's signed," he said.

Asked if Abdur-Rahim was more attracted to Sacramento for financial or basketball reasons, Goodwin answered quickly.

"It's absolutely for basketball reasons," Goodwin said. "He now walks into a position where he continues to play, and there are no questions about his ability to play. He can play with Mike Bibby, and he gives them a low-post presence."

The terms of the potential contract have yet to be settled. The Kings, who are over the salary cap, could use their $5 million mid-level exception for the signing. They could also convince Portland General Manager John Nash to do a sign-and-trade, though Nash has been against the idea in the past.

Christie Wants To Sign One-Year Pact With Dallas

Aug 11, 2005 8:35 AM

Doug Christie wants to sign a one-year, $3 million contract offer from the Mavericks when he becomes a free agent next week, according to a league source.

He won't do anything, though, before he and his wife visit the area.

A 6-foot-6, 205-pound swingman, Christie would provide the Mavs with the defensive presence they've lacked on the perimeter since Raja Bell left in 2003.

Christie would also replace Michael Finley, whom the Mavs are expected to waive by Monday, barring an unexpected trade.

"Dallas is definitely one of the teams that are high on Doug's list, because of the type of team, the coaching staff, the city, and the way that his game is," Christie's agent, Bradley Marshall said.

"All those things, we think, are a good fit for Doug."

Minnesota Likes Maurice Evans

Aug 1, 2005 2:29 PM

Roger Montgomery, the agent of Maurice Evans told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his client

"Coach Casey really likes Maurice," Montgomery said Sunday. "He got to see Mo up close and personal in the playoffs (last season). He was really intrigued by what he brings to the table."

Evans signed a free-agent contract with the Wolves as an undrafted rookie out of Texas. He played in 10 games as a rookie during the 2001-02 season. But Minnesota released him just before the start of the 2002-03 season.

He played with Olympicos in Greece and then Benetton Treviso in Italy. He returned to the NBA last season.

Evans, 26, averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 19 minutes a game with the Kings. He played in 65 games and started 11 times. He shot 44.2 percent.

"Mo is a defensive-minded player," Montgomery said. "He can shoot the jump shot, which was a knock on his game in the past. Now he shoots it with consistency."

The Wolves face competition for Evans, who also is attracting interest from Seattle and San Antonio.
