Heat, Spurs To Play Extra Game To Benefit Katrina Relief

Sep 8, 2005 8:21 PM

The Miami Heat and the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs will play each other in an extra exhibition game to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief.

The game will be played Oct. 10 in Miami. It will be the first preseason game for both teams.

As the host team, the Heat will donate all its proceeds from ticket sales, concessions, parking and retail sales to the American Red Cross. Another contribution will be made to a still-undetermined charity on behalf of the Heat, the Spurs, the NBA and the league players' association.

Tickets will be sold at regular season prices, in an effort to maximize the contribution.

Along with the revenue donation, selected vendors providing the employees who would normally work at AmericanAirlines Arena for games will donate their service fee, and all arena employees will donate their time for that night's game.

Kiwi Sean Marks Re-Signs With Spurs

Sep 7, 2005 2:06 AM

Before he re-signed with the Spurs during his summer of free agency in 2004, Manu Ginobili wanted to know if free-agent center Sean Marks also would be returning to the roster. The two had become fast friends, and Ginobili made sure the Spurs understood he would be more apt to commit to a long-term deal in San Antonio if he knew Marks would be back, too.

No outside leverage was needed for the Spurs to bring back Marks for a third season. The club announced Tuesday it had re-signed the good-natured 7-footer from New Zealand for the 2005-06 season.

"Sean is important to the chemistry of our team," Spurs' coach Gregg Popovich said. "We're thrilled to have him back."

Jazz Wait To Hear From Spurs On Brown

Sep 6, 2005 8:51 AM

Utah Jazz senior vice president of basketball operations said Monday evening he has not heard yet if the San Antonio Spurs will match his offer sheet for restricted free-agent guard Devin Brown.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had told the San Antonio Express-News on Friday that he planned to discuss the matter with general manager R.C. Buford over the weekend and have a decision by Monday morning, but a public announcement was not made Monday.

O'Connor said he doubted the Spurs would do anything prior to the deadline ? seven days from when they received a copy of the signed offer sheet ? because another team might offer a trade over the next few days that would mean the Spurs would want to hold onto Brown. Or a Spurs player could sustain an injury.

Utah's two-year offer is apparently for $2.5 million this season, a bit more next season, with the second year at the option of the team.

O'Connor said he's not sure exactly when San Antonio received a copy of the offer sheet but guessed it was last Friday morning, meaning the Spurs have until this Friday morning to match it. Official NBA transactions list the date as Friday.

Finley Makes It Official, Signing With Spurs

Sep 4, 2005 6:21 AM

Prized free agent Michael Finley officially signed with the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs on Friday. "We are extremely pleased to have a player of Michael's caliber joining our franchise," coach Gregg Popovich said. "He brings an All-Star level of talent to the floor and a high degree of character to the locker room."

The 32-year-old swingman had been courted by several rising powers in the league, including San Antonio, Phoenix, Miami and Minnesota.

He joins All-Star Manu Ginobili, Brent Barry and Bruce Bowen at San Antonio. The team also recently added Nick Van Exel, who played with Finley in Dallas.

Finley became a free agent last month when the Mavericks waived him under the league's new one-time amnesty clause. He's still owed nearly $52 million in salary from the Mavs, but the team is no longer obligated to match it in luxury taxes.

Finley's agent, Henry Thomas, announced Finley's decision to sign with San Antonio on Wednesday.
