Orlando trying to clear cap room for Davis

May 30, 2001 11:28 PM

Orlando Sentinel writer Tim Povtak reports that Orlando is exploring ways to get under the salary cap by up to 9 million to lure Antonio Davis (who told the Raptors on Wednesday, he was opting out of his contract that had 2 years and 15 million remaining on it) to Orlando this offseason. The Magic can get to that figure if Andrew Declercq opts out of his contract (Which Realgm doesn't expect him to do) and Bo Outlaw, Michael Doleac, and one of Orlando's 2 first round picks (15 and 23) were dealt to a team with cap room.

May 29, 2001 6:05 PM

Vince Carter has made it clear.  Talking to The Fan today, Carter said that re-signing with the Raptors is something he will consider once his contract expires after next season and not before.  ''I'm not going to let anybody rush me to make a decision. It's a big decision in my life, I don't want to be rushed,'' Carter told the radio station.

Vince Carter: Tycoon or Landlord?

May 27, 2001 12:37 AM

Is it a statement of his intentions, or a shrewd real estate investment?  Vince Carter has just purchased his second condo in Toronto's Queens Quay area, which is a short walk to Air Canada Place.  He bought his first unit in the same building last season.  It's a smaller unit that he'll rent out now.  The new unit is 6,000 square feet, and combines three previously separate suites.  The price is $2.75M, which is a bit less than his 01/02 salary will be.

A.D. Damage Control

May 26, 2001 1:04 AM

First Antonio Davis says he worries about Canadian schools.  Heaven forbid, but they sing the Canadian national anthem there.  What's worse, they teach metric measures like almost every country in the world rather than imperial.  Then after all of Canada -- or at least Toronto -- went into a fury of righteous indignation and inferiority Davis said, "Any intelligent person can plainly see that the quality of life and literacy rate in Canada are among the highest in the world.  Additional qualities I find refreshing are the cultural diversity and cohesiveness of the community."  GM Glen Grundwald offered to tutor Davis' kids in pounds and ounces.  Davis' agent, Bill Duffy, was astounded at the Canadian reaction, indicating Toronto is still a serious possibility for Davis.
