Draymond Green: Raptors Wouldn't Have Stood A Chance If Kevin Durant Didn't Get Hurt

Apr 23, 2020 7:41 PM

Draymond Green believes the Golden State Warriors would have comfortably defeated the Toronto Raptors in last year's Finals if Kevin Durant wasn't injured.

"Once we got Kevin, we were f--king unstoppable," Green said of signing Durant in 2016. "Even losing last year, Kevin don't get hurt—you seen the game he came back in Game 5, I looked up, it was like six minutes to go, we had like 40 points in the first quarter—and so they wouldn't have stood a chance if Kevin didn't get hurt."

Durant suffered a calf strain during Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals and returned approximately one month later for Game 5 of The Finals. Durant suffered a torn Achilles in the second quarter.

The Raptors went on to beat the Warriors in six games in The Finals.

Fred VanVleet: Everybody Is Just Preparing For Worst-Case Scenario Of Canceled Season

Apr 22, 2020 11:06 PM

Fred VanVleet is skeptical of the NBA resuming the 19-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think everybody is just preparing for the worst-case scenario, the season being canceled," Van Vleet said in a conference call Wednesday. "We have to do what we have to do to try to shoulder the hit as best we can for us as players and owners and the league, while also working to try to resume as best we can."

VanVleet is a self-described skeptic.

"If our league is going to be a leader in terms of public health and public safety and player safety, you've got to follow the guidelines of what the virus is speaking to you, so the odds are probably against us in terms of that," VanVleet added. "But money, right? So, I think they'll find a way somehow, some way and try to make it happen. I could definitely see it going either way. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't come back and I wouldn't be surprised if we do come back."

VanVleet will be a free agent this offseason.

Masai Ujiri Says 'Still Plenty Of Work To Be Done' In Repairing Relationship With DeMar DeRozan

Apr 14, 2020 1:31 AM

Masai Ujiri said while his relationship with Dwane Casey has improved, he still has to do "plenty of work" in repairing his relationship with DeMar DeRozan.

"It's not easy. If you have that human part of you, you feel it in your heart. ... With Casey, it has gotten so much better now with his family and him. With DeMar there is still plenty of work to be done. But, by the grace of God, it will all get better. We have to continue to make these decisions that are tough. But that's the business of basketball, and the position that we are in," Ujiri told Ernie Johnson in an interview.

Ujiri fired Casey and traded DeRozan in the 2018 offseason.

He admitted that transactions put a strain on personal relationships.

"I always say that the two hardest things in our world, in our business, is trading a player and then when a player leaves, if a player leaves in free agency. And it's hard on both sides. When a player is traded, it is hard on the player side, and when a player leaves, like us [with Leonard last summer], it is hard on that side. I've experienced all of it, from wonderful people. It sometimes puts a strain on relationships, as we saw with DeMar," said Ujiri.

Ujiri also expressed his support for how Adam Silver is handling the situation surrounding COVID-19, and that he was optimistic that the season would return.

"I know with all the input his leadership team with the NBA, and how he directs it, we will come up with something great. He's taking all our input. I am confident that we'll get back playing in some kind of way. We miss the game, man. We miss sports. We miss the game."

The Chicago Bulls are unlikely to interview Bobby Webster or Adam Simon to run their front office.

Webster and Simon were identified as candidates but both are expected to remain with their existing teams.

Webster is reportedly in line for a new deal with the Toronto Raptors. Simon, meanwhile, grew up in Miami and is well respected by Pat Riley.

Chad Buchanan also withdrew from consideration.

Nick Nurse Remains '100 Percent Committed' To Coaching Canada

Apr 3, 2020 3:16 PM

Nick Nurse remains "100 percent committed" to coach of Canada for the Tokyo Olympics.

Canada was scheduled to host a last-chance qualifying tournament in Victoria this June, but that has been postponed.

It's disappointing, but I can wait," Nurse said Friday. "Let's put it in perspective. It's not nearly as disappointing as what's happening around in daily life."

Nurse was an assistant coach for the British team at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Masai Ujiri, Nick Nurse Haven't Held Discussion Talks With Raptors

Apr 1, 2020 9:54 PM

The Toronto Raptors have not used the current suspension of the NBA to season to discuss possible contract extensions for Masai Ujiri and Nick Nurse.

Both Ujiri and Nurse are currently scheduled to be on expiring contracts in 20-21. Ujiri would obviously handle any extension talks with Nurse, while his own talks would be with MLSE.

The future of Ujiri with the Raptors is believed to be more certain after the Washington Wizards and New York Knicks hired other executives to run their respective front offices.

“I’m fine. … (My contract) is honestly like the last thing on my mind. I miss the game, man. Like I miss it. I miss basketball. If you have concern, I’m concerned for my team, I’m concerned for my family, I’m concerned for the world.”
