Ja Morant Receives 25-Game Suspension From NBA

Jun 16, 2023 10:52 AM

The NBA will issue a 25-game suspension to Ja Morant.

Morant was seen flashing a gun on Instagram Live this offseason following an eight-game suspension for a similar incident at a nightclub in Colorado.

Morant met with Adam Silver in March after leaving his brief stay at a counseling program in Colorado.

The suspension will come with conditions for his return and it will cost him $7.6 million. Morant is beginning a five-year, $194 million extension he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2022 offseason.

“Ja Morant’s decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games,” said Silver in a statement released on Friday.  “The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning.  Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated.

“For Ja, basketball needs to take a back seat at this time.  Prior to his return to play, he will be required to formulate and fulfill a program with the league that directly addresses the circumstances that led him to repeat this destructive behavior.”

NBA Has 'Uncovered Additional Information' On Ja Morant, Discipline Will Wait Until After Finals

Jun 1, 2023 9:35 PM

Adam Silver addressed the NBA's investigation into Ja Morant in which the Memphis Grizzlies guard was on social media for the second time this year flashing a firearm.

Silver said the NBA has uncovered "additional information" and that no punishment will be announced during The Finals.

"So in assessing what discipline is appropriate, if that's the case, we look at both the history of prior acts, but then we look at the individual player's history, as well," said Silver. "And the seriousness, of course, of the conduct. Those are all things that get factored.

"It's not an exact science. It comes down to judgment at the end of the day on the part of me and my colleagues in the league office.

"In terms of the timing, we've uncovered a fair amount of additional information, I think, since I was first asked about the situation. I will say we probably could have brought it to a head now, but we made the decision, and I believe the Players Association agrees with us, that it would be unfair to these players and these teams in the middle of the series to announce the results of that investigation.

"Given that we're of course in the offseason, he has now been suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies indefinitely, so nothing would have changed anyway in the next few weeks. It seemed better to park that at the moment, at least any public announcement, and my sense now is that shortly after the conclusion of the Finals we will announce the outcome of that investigation."
