France Gives Joel Embiid October 10 Deadline For Olympics Decision

France would like to see Joel Embiid suit up for them when they host the 2024 Summer Olympics. But French basketball federation president Jean-Pierre Siutat said that they need an answer by October 10.

“It will happen very quickly in all cases. We hope so and I think he knows it. We may have an answer by October 10," Siutat said. "We have set this deadline.”

Siutat added, “We never communicated anything official about Joel Embiid. There was buzz created from everywhere, and I repeat that I want him to come. However, we made no communication about the fact that he was with us. Today, he is still not with us. We are working on it, we have a firm desire to do it. He knows it. We had the opportunity to discuss it with him and we are awaiting a decision. The American team is very interested in the idea of ​​having him. Cameroon is qualified for the pre-Olympics. It’s a delicate situation for him.”

Victor Wembanyama reaffirmed his commitment to play for France in next summer's Paris Olympics.

"Performing well at the Olympics would be a great story. I'll be present at the Olympics, and there's no other goal than gold," said Wembanyama.

France failed to qualify for the second round at the most recent FIBA World Cup.

"The World Cup was very disappointing. But I have no judgment to make as I wasn't there," added Wembanyama.

Team USA fell short at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. If LeBron James has his way, the USA won't suffer a similar result at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

James is reportedly ready to commit to playing for Team USA next summer. And James wants to bring along several other American-born stars to join him.

Players the Lakers superstar has reportedly reached out to include Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green. That group of five is reportedly ready to commit.

Devin Booker, D'Aaron Fox, Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving have all also expressed interest in playing for Team USA in Paris. Anthony Edwards and Mikal Bridges are also expected receive consideration from the World Cup team. In addition, Bam Adebayo and Desmond Bane are expected to be considered for the roster.

Team USA is also expected to try to recruit Joel Embiid. Embiid hasn't suited up for an international tournament and remains eligible to play for either the United States or France, should he choose to play in the Olympics.

Canada Earns Olympic Berth After Defeating Spain 88-85

Canada beat Spain 88-85 in the second round of the FIBA World Cup, eliminating the defending World Cup champions.

Canada also qualified for next summer's Olympics with the win.

Canada entered the fourth quarter of the game down 73-61. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored or assisted on Canada's last 14 points of the game.

Canada are set to play Slovenia in the quarterfinals.

South Sudan, Japan Earn Olympic Berths

South Sudan earned an Olympic berth after defeating Angola 101-78 in the FIBA World Cup. The team went 3-2 in the tournament, becoming the highest-ranked World Cup team from Africa.

"It's an unbelievable story. It's an underdog story that, not just for the South Sudanese, not just for Africa, but for the rest of the world. It's a feel-good story that majority of people can relate to. It's such a unique achievement because it's beyond basketball," said Luol Deng, who took over the program three years ago.

South Sudan are coached by Rockets assistant Royal Ivey.

Japan also qualified for next summer's Olympics after defeating Cape Verde 80-71. The team was lead by Joshua Hawkinson's 29 points. 

Japan finished with a 3-2 record over the tournament and was the highest-ranked Asian team in the World Cup.

Klay Thompson To Give 'Serious Consideration' To Playing For The Bahamas

Klay Thompson said that he would consider playing for The Bahamas should the team qualify for next year's Paris Olympics.

“When that time comes, I will give it serious consideration just because of what The Bahamas meant to the Thompson family, especially my father,” said Thompson.

Thompson represented the U.S. in both the 2014 FIBA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

The Bahamas is coached by Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco. 

The national team is also exploring moves for Evan and Isaiah Mobley and Naz Reid.
