NCAA Suggest College Basketball Players Receive Three COVID-19 Tests Per Week

Sep 27, 2020 1:29 AM

The NCAA released its health and safety guidelines for the upcoming basketball season, suggesting that players and coaches get tested for COVID-19 three times per week.

The NCAA Sport Science Institute partnered with the NCAA COVID-19 Medical Advisory Group to create the guidelines.

"This basketball resocialization guidance is based on the best information available in a rapidly changing COVID-19 environment. It is predicated on the assumption that rapid testing capabilities will be readily available later this year. We will constantly assess emerging information as we prepare for the start of the basketball season at the end of November," said NCAA president Mark Emmert.

Basketball received a "high contact risk sport" classification, with an estimated 25-30 Tier 1 individuals per team.

The guidelines suggest that players and coaches don't need to observe social distancing rules on the bench, though Tier 2 individuals and scorekeepers should observe distancing and mask rules.

Pac-12, SEC Announce Start Dates For College Basketball Season

Sep 26, 2020 1:20 AM

The Pac-12 and SEC both announced start dates for the upcoming college basketball season.

Pac-12 games will begin on November 25th, the same day as the rest of the country. The league had originally announced that it wouldn't schedule games until January 2021.

The Pac-12 will release schedule details in the near future. The league said last December that it planned to increase conference games from 18 to 20 games.

The SEC announced that the men's conference season will begin on December 29th, with the women's conference season starting on December 31st.

The men's schedule will feature 18 games on 20 play dates, with the women playing 16 games over 18 play dates.

Nonconference games for SEC sides will also begin on November 25th.

Britain's Cameron Hildreth Commits To Wake Forest

Sep 25, 2020 1:17 AM

British guard Cameron Hildreth announced his commitment to Wake Forest.

Hildreth is one of the top international recruits for the 2021 class, and has represented Great Britain at the U16 and U18 level.

Hildreth broke out at the EuroLeague's Adidas Next Generation Tournament (ANGT) in February, averaging 25.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

"I've had the 'role' conversation with the coaches a few times now, and what I like is that they are bringing me in to play my game and not to change it. I'm an energy guy, I love to compete, I feel I'm capable to be known as a scorer, and I have a high enough IQ to be a good point guard. I'm just willing to play any role on the team that allows us to win. Because I hate to lose more than I love to win," said Hildreth.

There is also a possibility of "crossover" games, with teams from different tournaments playing each other outside of their scheduled games.

Nonconference games are expected to take place in "controlled environments" across the country, including Las Vegas, Indianapolis, and the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

College Basketball Season To Begin On Nov. 25th

Sep 16, 2020 6:16 PM

The 20-21 men's and women's college basketball seasons will begin on November 25th.

"By Thanksgiving week, the date of Nov. 25, 76% of all Division-I schools will have either finished their fall semester completely or released the general student body for in-person instruction," NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt said on the webinar.

The season was originally expected to begin on Nov. 10 with the Champions Classic involving Duke, Michigan State, Kansas and Kentucky.

Gavitt has said the NCAA is still planning for the NCAA tournament to proceed as scheduled, with 68 teams and 14 sites in March and April.

ACC Proposes 2021 Men's Basketball Tournament That Includes Every Division I Team

Sep 12, 2020 1:28 AM

The NCAA is not considering a "contingency plan" to expand the 2021 men's basketball tournament, according NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt.

Gavitt's comments come on the heels of the ACC, lead by Mike Krzyzewski, proposing a 2021 tournament that would include every Division I team.

Gavitt has previously said that the NCAA wants to keep the tournament in March and April.

"Every college basketball team's goal is to play in the NCAA tournament because everyone loves March Madness. ... While all who care about the game are entitled to their opinion, and we'll always listen respectfully, at this time we are not working on any contingency plan that involves expanding the tournament field," said Gavitt.

Sources told ESPN that the ACC is "all-in" on their proposal.

Krzyzewski said that the ACC's proposal could unify the sport.

"Given the uncertainty of this upcoming season, I join my fellow ACC coaches in fully supporting the inclusion of all eligible Division I teams to participate in the 2021 NCAA tournament. This is not a regular season. It is clearly an irregular season that will require something different. Our sport needs to be agile and creative. Most importantly, an all-inclusive postseason tournament will allow a unique and unprecedented opportunity for every team and every student-athlete to compete for a national championship."
