Hawks-Lakers Set Philips Arena Attendance Record

Mar 29, 2009 6:54 PM

Sunday's Hawks vs. Lakers matchup at Philips Arena drew the highest single-game crowd for a Hawks game in Philips Arena's nearly 10-year history (20,148).

Following are the top three regular season Hawks marks at Philips Arena:

20,148 vs. Los Angeles Lakers (3/29/09)
20,098 vs. Boston (4/12/08)
20,073 vs. Washington (11/1/01)

Sunday was also the club's 11th sellout this season, extending the total for the most the Hawks have recorded in a single season at Philips Arena, topping the eight from each of the last two seasons.

The Philips Arena mark for any Hawks game (including playoffs) is the 20,425 attracted for last year's First Round playoff game 6 contest against Boston (5/2/08).

The Hawks own the NBA record for the highest single-game attendance, when 62,046 fans packed the Georgia Dome for a 3/27/98 meeting with the Bulls.

Josh Smith: It Feels Good To Prove People Wrong

Mar 25, 2009 4:25 PM

The Hawks have clinched a rare winning season and are closing in on their second straight playoff berth, something that many doubted they could accomplish.

"It feels good to prove people wrong as a team and as an organization," said Smith, who is one of only a few people that were around when Atlanta won 15 games five seasons ago.

"You get tired of being told you're not good enough or you can't do something. And that's all anybody had to say about us for a long time. So to be in this position now, with a chance to not only make the playoffs but also a chance to snag home court advantage and put up the best season this city has seen in years, it means a lot.

"It shows you just how much we've grown as a group. Myself and Joe [Johnson] and Marvin [Williams] and some of the other guys that have been around the last three or four years, we've gone from the bottom to where we are now and it's a good feeling."

Josh Smith, Woodson Address Feud

Mar 21, 2009 11:13 AM

Hawks coach Mike Woodson and forward Josh Smith addressed their relationship on Friday, insisting that their feud is nothing personal.

"I want to set the record straight about this one last time," Woodson said. "This is not now, and has never been, about me hating Josh or Josh hating me. It's not a personal thing. We get along just fine."

Two weeks ago they had a shouting match in the locker room at halftime, which led Woodson to bench Smith for the entire second half.

"People try to blow it out of proportion," Smith said. "But if you're not on the inside looking at it, you can only guess what kind of relationship you think we have. Players and coaches might disagree a lot and have their differences. At the end of the day, though, we still treat this as a work environment.

"We don't come in here and turn our noses up at each other. We joke and have fun now like we always have in the past. This isn't about two people hating each other. It's not a personal thing like that. We just agree to disagree on some things."

Woodson: Atlanta's Negativity Is Draining

Mar 18, 2009 4:06 PM

Hawks coach Mike Woodson is enjoying the relative success of the team as of late, but would like for the city of Atlanta to start showing some civic pride.

"It's great for the city," Woodson said of the recent success of both the Hawks and the NHL's Thrashers. "You need all the sports teams to do well. With that being said, they need support instead of always negativity going around. Sometimes it takes time, but we're so impatient. I've been here five years now. It's draining to me."

Hawks' Williams Won't Need Surgery

Mar 13, 2009 8:57 AM

Marvin Williams will not undergo surgery on his troublesome lower back and could play again this season.

Williams wants to return before Atlanta's regular season finale on April 15. He will undergo intense rehabilitation after being examined by doctors at Duke University on Wednesday.

"It's going to be anywhere from four to six weeks," Williams said Thursday. "I'm going to dive into this treatment, make sure I get good rest and hopefully get back out there."

The Hawks are still listing Williams as "out indefinitely."

Will Marvin Williams Miss Rest Of Season?

Mar 10, 2009 9:17 AM

There have been whispers around the Hawks that forward Marvin Williams could miss the remainder of the season with a back injury.

Williams missed Monday's game against New Orleans.

"He's going to seek a few more opinions about his back and then I'm sure he'll make a decision after that and then we'll know," coach Mike Woodson said.

The Hawks have said that he'll be out "indefinitely."

"If he's out for the rest of the season we can't worry about that," Johnson said. "We have to move forward with what we've got. Injuries are a part of the game, they happen. And unfortunately it's a tough loss for us, but we have to be strong and be strong for Marvin as well.  And everybody will have to step their play up."

No Fine Or Suspension For Smith

Mar 7, 2009 9:02 PM

Josh Smith and Mike Woodson both refused to comment on their alleged shouting match Friday evening in Charlotte.

The Hawks' forward was not fined or suspended and was in the lineup on Saturday night against Detroit.

"No comment," Woodson said. "We're going to move forward. It has been resolved. He will be back in the lineup playing tonight. It happens. That's all I can tell you. It happens. "

Smith, Woodson Get Into Altercation

Mar 7, 2009 10:45 AM

Hawks' head coach Mike Woodson and forward Josh Smith reportedly had to be separated during halftime of the team's game against the Bobcats on Friday night.

Woodson reportedly got into Smith's face criticizing him for selfish play, and the forward responded defensively.

Smith didn't play in the second half of the game, a 98-91 loss to Charlotte.

?That was coach?s call,? Joe Johnson said. ?This is coach?s team. Whoever he wants to play plays, and if he doesn?t want you to play, you don?t play.?

?Josh played well in the first half,? Mo Evans said. ?It didn?t have nothing to do with his basketball playing abilities. It?s the off-the-court, internal stuff that causes all the drama.?
