Crawford Promises Hawks He Won't Opt Out

Jun 30, 2009 4:30 PM

Jamal Crawford had an opt out clause in his contract this year, but has promised the Hawks that he won't opt out.

Crawford has two years and $19 million left on his deal, and signed an agreement that he would not opt out.

"Looking forward, I'm ecstatic," Crawford told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "They could have sent me anywhere. To come to an up-and-coming team, a team that went to the second round of the playoffs, they were fun to watch... . I'm happy to be here and be a part of it."

Teague Set To Become Another Agent Zero

Jun 27, 2009 9:32 AM

Jeff Teague, taken with the 19th overall pick by the Hawks, will wear No. 0 to start his NBA career.

"I started wearing zero my freshman year of college," said Teague. "I wasn't highly recruited. I was kind of like the Gilbert Arenas story. He kind of reminded me of myself."

Teague has heard that he's too small to be a major player, and was lightly recruited out of high school.

"It was a lot of motivation," he said. "When I got there, people were telling me I probably wouldn't play a lot because I was a smaller guy and they had a lot of great players there already. But when I got my opportunity to play, I did pretty well. Now, to be in this situation, I feel like all the hard work has paid off."

Crawford For Law Deal Now Official

Jun 25, 2009 4:42 PM

The Golden State Warriors have acquired guards Acie Law and Speedy Claxton from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for guard Jamal Crawford, the Warriors announced on Thursday.

?We feel we have gained tremendous flexibility with the addition of Jamal,? said Atlanta GM Rick Sund.  ?He gives us balance in the backcourt, having produced at both point guard and shooting guard positions.  Not only is Jamal a talented scorer, but he can also deliver quality production down the stretch of games.?

Don Nelson had threatened to not play Crawford in 09-10 in an attempt to convince the guard not to exercise his early termination option, but instead the Warriors found a way to unload him.

Golden State is expected to receive insurance compensation on Claxton's contract.

Hawks Hinting They Won't Re-Sign Bibby?

Jun 25, 2009 12:15 PM

If the Hawks do in fact acquire Jamal Crawford, it could spell the end for Mike Bibby in Atlanta.

A source close to Bibby told ESPN on Thursday night that the team's management has sent signals that they won't re-sign the point guard this summer.

Trading for Crawford won't keep the Hawks from drafting a point guard in Thursday night's NBA Draft. Atlanta is reportedly looking at Brandon Jennings, Eric Maynor and Jeff Teague.

Crawford Deal Finalized, Won't Be Official Until July 1st

Jun 24, 2009 8:59 PM

The Warriors and Hawks have agreed in principle to a trade that will send Jamal Crawford to Atlanta in exchange for Speedy Claxton and Acie Law.

The deal will not be officially completed until July 1st.

Sources say that the trade does not rule out the possibility of Golden State drafting a point guard in Thursday's draft.

The Warriors expect to receive insurance compensation on 80% of Claxton's contract since he is not expected to play.

Sund: Draft Isn't As Helpful To Playoff Clubs

Jun 23, 2009 3:43 PM

Hawks general manager Rick Sund doesn't believe that the NBA Draft is overly helpful to playoff-caliber teams.

"Generally if you're a playoff caliber club, whoever you get in that draft pick isn't going to play because it's tough to beat any of your 8 man rotation," Sund told 790 The Zone.

Atlanta, however, does have a number of players on their roster that could leave via free agency.

"It's going to be very difficult to say, 'What are we looking for that we need?' We really need the growth from within. Here's the point - I can build a case and sit here today and say, 'We should get a center because we don't know the status of Zaza.' We can say, 'Hey, let's get a forward because we might lose Marvin we can say, 'What if Flip goes and we need a scorer off the bench and what if Bibby goes?' You can build a case for any of these, which leads me to think we really should get the best player."

The Hawks have the 19th overall pick.

Hawks Show Interest In Ellington

Jun 22, 2009 4:23 PM

The Hawks have shown interest in North Carolina guard Wayne Ellington.

Atlanta, who owns the 19th pick, was impressed with Ellington's professionalism.

"That's a man on a job interview," coach Mike Woodson said of Ellington, who dressed in a suit after his workout "I love to see that."

Ellington is projected to go in the bottom half of the first round of Thursday night's NBA Draft.

"You never know what's going to happen with this process," Ellington said. "Coming from a program like North Carolina, you learn to do things a certain way, and you get used to winning at a high level. So that's all you really want to do at [the NBA] level, and that's be a part of a winning program."

Hawks Can't Trade Smith Without Consent

Jun 18, 2009 3:51 PM

There have been rumors that the Hawks are looking to trade Josh Smith, but doing so won't be an easy task.

ESPN's Chad Ford originally reported that Atlanta is looking to move Smith, but SLAM's Lang Whitaker has confirmed that because the Hawks matched an offer sheet that the forward received from the Grizzlies last offseason, they can't deal him for one year without consent.

Whitaker also confirmed that the trade kicker that accompanies Smith's contract is worth closer to $7 million than the $6 million initially reported.
