Agent Says Cavaliers Are Irving's Top Priority

May 31, 2011 7:42 PM

There's a chance Duke point guard Kyrie Irving's pre-draft tour might consist of one stop.

"Our priority is Cleveland," agent Jeff Wechsler said from his office in Florida on Tuesday.

Irving, 19, might work out only for the Cavaliers. Don't expect him to work out with any other players.

"For my safety, I'm not going to work out with anyone else," he said at the NBA draft combine in Chicago on May 20.

Cavaliers Appeal For Extension On $14.5 Million Trade Exception

May 29, 2011 3:05 PM

With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire in about a month and no real signs of progress, a likely lockout has left the Cavs in a predicament with their trade exception.

The Cavs have until July 9 to use the $14.5 million trade exception they obtained in the LeBron James deal with the Miami Heat. But the lockout is set to begin July 1, rendering the final nine days of the trade exception worthless.

The Cavs have petitioned the league to have the final nine days tacked on to the new season. If granted, it would give the Cavs nine days after the lockout was lifted to use whatever part of the exception they had remaining. But the Cavs have no idea whether or not the league will grant the request, and they don't expect to hear an answer from the league until after the lockout is lifted.

Cavaliers In Trade Talks With Timberwolves, Pistons For No. 2 Pick

May 28, 2011 4:03 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.

The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, along with their fourth pick, to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' second pick.

Cleveland would then buy Hamilton out of the $25 million remaining in the last two years on his contract, leaving the veteran shooting guard free to sign with another club as a free agent.

Derrick Williams Thinks He Can Replace LeBron In Cleveland

May 19, 2011 7:26 PM

Arizona Wildcat forward Derrick Williams isn't lacking confidence. As a matter of fact, it appears he has an overabundance of it.

In a statement after finding out Tuesday night that the Cleveland Cavaliers would have the first pick in the NBA Draft, Williams shared why he'd be the best option with the first pick.

"I think I'm the No. 1 pick because I have more star quality I would think," the small forward said. "I'm just a bigger person. Just trying to fill in for a big star like LeBron like they're missing. That missing piece. I think that's me."

Irving Skips Combine Workouts

May 19, 2011 6:55 PM

Kyrie Irving confirmed on Thursday that he would only do medical testing and interviews, deciding to skip workouts.

Irving is widely considered the likely top overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft.

The Cavaliers, however, have not given Irving an indication of whether they will select him.

Gilbert: Cavs Winning Lottery Was Karma

May 19, 2011 10:08 AM

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wished bad karma upon LeBron James when he left Cleveland last summer.

Perhaps getting the No. 1 pick in Tuesday’s NBA draft lottery is the good karma in which the Cavs have been waiting.

“(Karma has come) to mind, but not to my mouth yet ... or my Twitter account,” Gilbert joked.

The blistering open letter to James drew cheers from many fans in Cleveland and jeers from many in the national media.

“They should have seen the first version of the letter if they are so upset,” Gilbert said.

The Cavs owner certainly didn’t back down from his prediction that his team would win a title before Miami.

“Until it doesn’t happen, I still believe it,” he said.

LeBron Happy For Cavs, Fans After Draft Lottery

May 18, 2011 7:42 PM

The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers exited the NBA Draft lottery with the No. 1 overall pick, they selected hometown hero LeBron James in 2003.

The marriage lasted seven eventful seasons, until James' free-agent parting to the Miami Heat last summer.

Tuesday, while waiting for Wednesday's Game 2 of these Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls, James watched as the Cavaliers again exited the 2011 lottery with the top overall selection.

"I'm happy for the franchise, I'm happy for the fans," he said. "I think it is a good step for them.

"But I've got a lot more things to worry about now than the lottery."

Olshey Doesn’t Regret Not Protecting Clippers' Draft Pick

May 18, 2011 10:22 AM

Clippers general manager Neil Olshey doesn’t regret not insisting on protection for their lottery pick.

“Protecting the pick was never an option,” Olshey told NBA.com. “There is no way to Monday morning quarterback this (since) our draft position wouldn’t have been the same had we not made the deal as I’m sure we would not have finished 11-11 post-trade without Mo Williams.

“Additionally, we had a 97-percent chance of sitting here tonight with Baron Davis (taking up 25 percent of our cap), the eighth pick in a weak draft and no cap flexibility. Adding Mo Williams and $8.5 million in cap room gave us a better opportunity to become a playoff team next year than adding a seventh player under 23 with no NBA experience.”

Saying adding protection to the pick — for the top three, for example — was not possible is an indication the clause would have been a deal breaker for the Cavaliers.

Cavs Win Lottery; Wolves Second, Jazz Third

May 17, 2011 11:24 PM

Ten months after LeBron James left the team as a free agent, the Cavaliers took a major step toward rebuilding their franchise by winning the first overall pick in Tuesday's draft lottery.

Ironically, the ping pong ball that bounced Cleveland's way was attached to the Clippers' selection, which the team acquired in the Baron Davis trade, not their own. The latter pick fell to fourth despite the Cavaliers having the second-best chance at taking one of the top three spots, given that the team owned the league's second-worst record.

The Wolves, with the NBA's worst record, took the second selection and the Jazz will pick third, by way of the pick Utah acquired from New Jersey in the trade of Deron Williams to the Nets.

Full lottery results are as follows:

1.  Cleveland (via Clippers)

2.  Minnesota

3.  Utah (via Nets)

4.  Cleveland

5.  Toronto

6.  Washington

7.  Sacramento

8.  Detroit

9.  Charlotte

10.  Milwaukee

11.  Golden State

12.  Utah

13.  Phoenix

14.  Houston

Kerr: Magic Following Roster Blueprint Of Cavaliers

May 13, 2011 10:10 PM

The Orlando Magic's options are severely limited by an oversized payroll and by a roster that lacks attractive trade assets.

"I just feel like they've kind of gone down the same path as Cleveland went around LeBron [James]," Steve Kerr, an analyst for TNT and the former general manager of the Phoenix Suns, said during an interview Friday.

"Not to make it an ominous sign, but they've really tried hard and they've spent a ton of money to put people around Dwight hoping that that would convince him to stay, hoping that that would get the franchise over the top.

"But in the end, the risk was extending themselves on the cap and really hamstringing their future options. It was very similar to Cleveland, and I think that's where Orlando is now. There's no way — there's no way — you can get Chris Paul or Deron Williams when you don't have cap room and you don't have assets."
