Mike D'Antoni's Agent Claims Rockets' Offer Considerably Lower Than $5M

May 31, 2019 9:57 PM

The agent for Mike D'Antoni contends that the offer his client received from the Houston Rockets was considerably smaller than the $5 million that was depicted by Tilman Fertitta.

The final season of his current contract pays $4.5 million.

Warren LeGarie said that the Rockets’ offer would not be worth $5 million in the 20-21 season if the Rockets failed to make the playoffs or D’Antoni was fired during the season.

“I’d like clear up some inaccuracies that were stated about the offer made to Mike,” LeGarie said. “The reported $5 million is really $2.5 million because it comes with contingencies. One, it’s only $5 million if he makes the playoffs and two, if he is coaching the team at the end of the year.

“If they decide to fire Mike in the proverbial change of direction he gets $2.5 million. If there is an injury or a change in the roster construction, of which Mike has no control, he nonetheless would become a victim of it.”

LeGarie also said the $1 million bonus for each round of the playoffs the Rockets reached in that season would begin with the second round.

“We’re not here to criticize the offer,” LeGarie said. “We’re here to choose whether or not to accept it. We chose based on the current market for coaches of his stature as well as what he has done for the Rockets, the offer did not make sense for him, though I’m sure it makes sense for the Rockets. We don’t consider the offer insulting. It’s still real money. But it is our right not to take it.”

Daryl Morey Expects To Keep Core Rockets Despite Trade Speculation

May 31, 2019 11:05 AM

Daryl Morey predicted the Houston Rockets' starting five will return next season despite reports that he has been aggressive on the trade market and has made everyone conceivably available.

“My job is to make the best team possible, give us a chance to win a championship,” Morey said. “My job is to look at every aspect of the organization. How can we improve? Whether that be players, … yeah we’re going to look for better players."

The Rockets have also begun to overhaul their coaching staff.

“Whatever it takes to get over that final hump to get a championship, that’s what we’re going to do. On the coaching front, I … recommended we make some changes. If there’s a trade out there that helps us, great, we’ll do that as well.

“Our starting five this year I would put up there with anyone. If there's a trade out there that helps we'll do that. We're going to keep all of our key people."

Rockets Aggressive In Trade Talks With All Players, Picks Available

May 29, 2019 2:05 PM

The Houston Rockets have exhibited an "aggressive desire to improve roster with all players and picks available in talks" with other teams.

The Rockets were eliminated in the Western Conference Semifinals in six games by the Golden State Warriors.

Adrian Wojnarowski posits that all players under contract with the probable exception of James Harden could be made available, which means Chris Paul could be discussed. Paul re-signed with the Rockets last offseason on a four-year, $160 million deal.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported last week that Harden and Paul had a heated exchange following their Game 6 loss to the Warriors.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reports Clint Capela is among the players Houston has gauged the market for in recent days.

Rockets, Pelicans Interested In Hiring Tyronn Lue For Lead Assistant Job

May 28, 2019 10:03 AM

The Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans have pursued Tyronn Lue for a lead assistant role, but he remains focused on a return to the NBA in a head coaching role.

Lue was fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in October of last year.

Lue was offered the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching job, but was unable to agree to contract terms.

The Rockets are working to add to their staff following the departures of assistant coaches Jeff Bzdelik, Mitch Vanya and Roy Rogers, player development assistant Irv Roland and video coordinator John Cho.

The Rockets offered Lue an assistant coaching job soon after he was fired in October.

Lue has history working with New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry and executive Vice President David Griffin.

Chris Paul, James Harden Had Verbal Back-And-Forth After Game 6 Loss

May 23, 2019 11:57 AM

Members of the Houston Rockets, most notably Chris Paul, had spirited discussions with Mike D'Antoni throughout the season about incorporating more movement within the offense.

D'Antoni adapted his offense to be more isolation based to allow James Harden to succeed.

The Rockets have had success playing this way in the regular season, but defenses can key in on these types of tendencies in the playoffs with more ease.

In the regular season, Harden scored 1.11 points per possession in isolation. In the postseason, Harden scored 1.04 points per possession in isolation.

Harden and Paul had tense moments with one another throughout the Rockets' Game 6 loss to the Warriors, culminating in a verbal back-and-forth postgame that went into the locker room, according to sources. The exchange was about ball distribution in Game 6.

Mike D'Antoni: I Can Coach At 'High Level' For At Least 3 More Years

May 20, 2019 1:08 AM

The Houston Rockets and Mike D'Antoni have discussed the framework of a contract extension as D'Antoni heads into the final year of his deal.

"I've let [general manager] Daryl [Morey] and [team owner] Tilman [Fertitta] know that I'm energized to keep coaching --- and believe that I can continue to do this at a high level for at least another three years. I want to be a part of a championship here," said D'Antoni.

It is unclear as to whether the Rockets would give D'Antoni a 3-year extension.

With the Rockets deciding not to renew top assistant Jeff Bzdelik's contract, there reportedly may be more changes to D'Antoni's staff this offseason.
