Cavs Look at Williams

Aug 31, 2001 8:52 AM

Chris Tomasson of the Beacon Journal reports that the Cavs, who have 13 players with guaranteed contracts, are taking their time in deciding whether to sign a 14th player to a guaranteed deal. The Cavs are looking for a third point guard and another big man. The leading candidate to get a guaranteed offer is Seattle free agent point guard Shammond Williams. If the Cavs were to sign Williams to an offer sheet, which would be at least three years long and likely worth between $2.5-$3 million the first year, the SuperSonics would have 15 days to match it. It's unclear whether they would.

in related news, the Cavs are unlikely to offer point guards Damon Jones or Anthony Goldwire or power forward Carlos Rogers any guaranteed money, but are considering inviting them to training camp. And the chances are looking better each day that often-injured center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will be on the court when training camp starts on October 2nd. For the last two weeks, Ilgauskas has been working out on the court with Cavs assistant Ron Ekker. Ilgauskas has been getting stronger with each session. ``He will visit the doctor the week before training camp and tests will be done,'' Cavs general manager Jim Paxson said. ``They'll then determine what he'll be able to do, whether it's participate in 50 percent of the workouts or whatever.''

Sonics Still Shopping Payton?

Aug 27, 2001 1:49 PM

The Pioneer Press reports that there is some talk around the league of a Minnesota movement to acquire Gary Payton. Emphasis on "talk" at the moment.

Reportedly, The Wolves, Chicago, Seattle and New York have tossed around some possible scenarios, but they are extremely complicated and therefore unlikely to be completed.

A myriad of names have been thrown around. Supposedly Minnesota would deal Terrell Brandon to the Knicks and Wally Szczerbiak to Chicago. The Bulls would likely send some package of Ron Mercer, Marcus Fizer and Ron Artest to Seattle. The Knicks would send one of their point guards somewhere, unless they feel they really need to carry 4 quarterbacks.

Sonics' new logo is old school

Aug 24, 2001 10:32 AM

The Seattle Times reports: The Sonics will unveil their sixth logo in 34 years tomorrow.

The official unveiling will be at noon tomorrow during the Four-on-the-Floor Tournament at Nate McMillan Court, at Mercer and Fifth Avenue North.

"Sports teams' identities are built on tradition," said Howard Schultz, the principal owner of the Sonics. "We are changing the logo out of respect for the rich heritage of the Sonics."

If the weather is bad, the event will be at the Furtado Center, the Sonics' training facility, just east of Nate McMillan Court.

ESPN announced that Seattle has introduced its new center Thursday in Calvin Booth.  Booth signed a six-year, $34 million contract, said his agent Mark Termini.  "They have higher expectations. That's what I like about Seattle," said Booth.  "Dallas was a very positive situation, but I look at this as a more positive situation. ... It's a great challenge. I don't think I could have turned that challenge down."
