Oct 27, 2006 5:47 PM

After 12 NBA seasons, spent with the Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, Brian Grant announced his retirement on Friday due to chronic knee problems.

"I just decided it was time to hang it up. I really wasn't able to perform over the past few years like I was the first 10 years," he said. "It was time.

"For 12 years -- really 16 years -- you've been on a schedule where you know what's going to happen every day for the next seven months," said the 34-year-old Grant. "Now I wonder what I'm going to do the next day. So that's an adjustment."

Blazers Anticipate LaFrentz's Return

Oct 23, 2006 5:43 AM

Raef LaFrentz could make his debut with Portland tonight after being out with a torn calf muscle, according to a report in The Oregonian.

LaFrentz had not taken part in a full practice this season with the Trail Blazers after tearing a muscle in the calf last month. Testing it last week, he still felt pain, but it wasn't the alarming kind.

"It's quite a difference between running and feeling like it's going to pull, and running and just being sore," said LaFrentz, who went through a full practice for the first time Sunday. "Soreness is no big deal, but when you feel ripping and tearing, that's no good."

If he still feels OK, LaFrentz will make his debut in a Blazers uniform when Portland plays host to Utah tonight at the Rose Garden in its final home exhibition game.

Outlaw's Play Has Blazers Taking Notice

Oct 10, 2006 6:21 AM

In Portland, Travis Outlaw is drawing attention to himself for excellent play.

In one scrimmage, he twice blocked a jump-hook by Jamaal Magloire, racing from the weak side to volleyball spike the shot from the 6-foot-11 center. Later, on defense, he blocked a dunk attempt in traffic by 7-1 center Joel Przybilla. All the while, he has been diving on the court for loose balls, streaking on fast breaks and leading the team during wind sprints.

"He's gritting his teeth going in there for rebounds and loose balls," coach Nate McMillan said. "He's fighting, showing some fight, and we need that from him. If he can continue to do that and get better -- because he is not there yet -- he can play. And he can help us."
