Jazz' Stars Ruin Warriors' Home Opener

Oct 31, 2007 2:50 AM

Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams shouldn't expect invitations to Baron Davis' opulent birthday bash or Stephen Jackson's homecoming party.

The Jazz stars have ruined every celebration they've attended in the Bay Area recently.

Boozer had 32 points and 15 rebounds; Williams added 24 points; and the Jazz jumped right back into last season's playoff form with a 117-96 victory over the Warriors on Tuesday night.

Jazz Preparing For End Of Sloan Era

Oct 16, 2007 11:46 AM

As owner Larry Miller revealed in an interview last week, the Jazz are starting to prepare for the day head coach Jerry Sloan steps down. The questions have taken shape as Sloan and the Jazz, together for a 20th season, talk about a contract extension that in the past was a formality.

"I think you've got to think about things like that, and we've got to do the planning," Miller said. "We've got to do some planning for where we go after Jerry decides to hang 'em up."

Jazz Ready To Give Max Deal To Williams Next Summer

Oct 13, 2007 2:43 PM

Jazz owner Larry Miller was recently asked about the particulars of signing Deron Williams to an extension next summer.

Not only would the Jazz be willing to extend Williams a maximum offer of five years and nearly $80 million, but Miller said in an interview the team would be able to do so without exceeding the luxury-tax threshold.

"If he keeps making the kind of progress he's making, I couldn't look him in the eye and tell him it was fair that he wasn't a max player," Miller said. "He's not that good yet, but he's got a long ways down the road to getting there."

Okur Hobbled With Case Of 'Dancer's Toe'

Oct 13, 2007 9:54 AM

Jazz center Mehmet Okur isn't too concerned about a cartilage injury that he said his doctor is calling "dancer's toe."

The discolored toe, however, has caused Okur some preseason problems.

"It's been hurting when I was in national team," said Okur, who played this past summer for his native Turkey in FIBA's EuroBasket tournament. "It just started to hurt, then I took a few days off right after tournament and I felt better.

"But as soon as I started running, I started to feel it again," he added. "It's not bad but still sore. Hopefully it's gonna get better before the season starts."

Okur, who's been treating the toe with ice, had 10 points and pulled down six rebounds but shot just 3-of-10 from the field while logging 20 minutes in Utah's 100-85 victory over his former Pistons club Friday.

Report: Boozer Won't Travel On Preseason Road Trip

Oct 11, 2007 8:02 PM

The Utah Jazz will have to wait a while longer for All-Star forward Carlos Boozer to return.

According to a report in the Deseret Morning News, Boozer will not travel with the team on its upcoming three-game preseason road trip.

"After that, I don't know," said Kevin O'Connor, the team's executive director of basketball operations. "It's got to be his call."

Boozer's year-old son Carmani is recovering in Miami from a bone-marrow transplant related to his battle with sickle cell anemia. Boozer missed all of the team's preseason camp in Boise and Utah's preseason opener, a 90-81 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Utah's Harpring Still Hurting After Knee Surgery

Oct 11, 2007 8:27 AM

Jazz forward Matt Harpring has acknowledged that his recovery following right knee surgery in August is going slower than expected.

Not only was Harpring ruled out of the preseason opener Wednesday, the Jazz said he was on a rehab protocol and would play in no games until further notice. It also was revealed that Harpring underwent left ankle surgery in September.

?I'm just anxious to get back on the court playing again, just playing full speed and banging and all that kind of stuff,'' Harpring said. ?That's what I'm waiting for. It is a little frustrating because I thought I'd be better by now. But it's not there yet.?

Harpring twice has undergone microfracture surgery on the knee, although the most recent surgery was to clean out scar tissue. He was limited to one practice a day during training camp and held out of contact drills at practice Monday and Tuesday.
