Jazz Beat Pacers, Give Corbin First Win

Feb 26, 2011 9:59 AM

The Jazz defeated the Pacers 95-84 on Friday night, giving coach Tyrone Corbin his first victory.

Utah ended a five-game losing streak and earned their first win since Jerry Sloan stepped down earlier this month.

"It seemed like a weight was lifted off our shoulders, getting the first win, and especially getting one for Ty," Paul Millsap said. "Tonight was for Ty to get his first win.

The game also marked the debuts of Devin Harris and Derrick Favors, who were acquired from New Jersey in the Deron Williams trade.

"It feels great," Corbin said. "The guys did a great job. They made a great effort. They stayed in the game the entire 48 minutes tonight. You can't ask for anything more from them."

Deron Signaled He Wouldn't Re-Sign; Nets Offer Only Jazz Considered

Feb 23, 2011 6:57 PM

The Jazz received signals from Deron Williams that he wanted to pay in a larger media market and was set to leave Utah when he could get out of his contract.

"We were running the risk of losing [Williams]," said Kevin O'Connor.

O'Connor explained that the team wanted to strike early so as not to be put in the position that the Nuggets faced when Carmelo Anthony decided he wanted out of Denver.

The Nets offer was the only acceptable one for Utah and once Anthony was sent to New York, the Nets moved forward on what O'Connor termed their "Plan B."

O'Connor said the Jazz never contacted the Knicks about the widely reported offer the team had made for Anthony, which Denver ultimately accepted.

Minnesota Showing Interest In Raja Bell

Feb 23, 2011 6:26 PM

The Timberwolves are interested in Jazz guard Raja Bell, according to a league source.

With the Jazz rebuilding in the wake of their trade of Deron Williams, looking to clear a veteran like Bell is a logical next step.

Sloan Has 'No Reaction' To Williams Trade

Feb 23, 2011 5:05 PM

Deron Williams has been traded, but it won't impact the retirement plans of Jerry Sloan.

"That didn't have anything to do with it," said Sloan on Wednesday. "I left on my own terms.''

Sloan said he didn't "have any reaction'' to Williams being traded.

Sloan spent a week in Salt Lake City following his resignation and has since been working on his farm in Illinois.

He won't rule out a return to coaching, however.

"I'm not even thinking about that,'' said Sloan, 68. "I might not be alive tomorrow.''

Paul Critical Of Utah's Trade Of Williams

Feb 23, 2011 2:28 PM

Chris Paul responded to the news of Utah trading Deron Williams with several less than flattering tags directed to the Jazz.

"Utah traded DWill?? #EpicFail #notagoodlook #trippin #cmonson," wrote Paul.

The Hornets are in a similar situation with Paul as the Jazz were with Williams. Both point guards are eligible to become free agents in 2012, but the Hornets have been aggressive in making a series of trades to improve their chances of retaining their franchise player.

Nets Acquire Deron Williams

Feb 23, 2011 1:41 PM

The New Jersey Nets have officially acquired two-time All Star guard Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz in exchange for guard Devin Harris, forward Derrick Favors, two first round draft picks (Nets 2011, Golden State 2012) and cash considerations, Nets General Manager Billy King announced.

The Nets will also send Troy Murphy and a second round pick to the Warriors for Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright in a separate trade.

"We are very excited to add a player the caliber of Deron Williams to our roster," said King. "He is one of the premier point guards in the NBA, and his skill and talent level will bolster our franchise as we continue to build towards our goal of becoming a championship-caliber team."

The Nets had been pursuing Carmelo Anthony for several months, but Williams is not a consolation prize from their perspective.

"This is not a plan B," Avery Johnson said. "It was just one that wasn't announced. One that nobody got -- until recently. He's not a plan B. He's a plan A also. We've been working on this for a while."

Utah recently lost head coach Jerry Sloan and now they will begin rebuilding with the Williams' trade.

“We feel that we’ve addressed a current need at point guard with Deron’s departure, as well as the future with draft picks and a big man,” said Jazz GM Kevin O’Connor. “To do so we had to give up an All-Star, but we feel like this is a win for both sides.”

Deron Unhappy With Trade To Nets

Feb 23, 2011 12:39 PM

Deron Williams was traded to the Nets on Wednesday, in a package that sent Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and two first round picks to Utah.

Williams is reportedly unhappy with the trade, according to reporting from the Salt Lake Tribune.

The trade came together very quickly and Williams was completely shocked to hear about it.

Nets Trade For Deron Williams

Feb 23, 2011 11:00 AM

The Nets have acquired Deron Williams.

Devin Harris and Derrick Favors will be traded to the Jazz, along with two first round picks. Utah will receive New Jersey's own pick in 2011 and Golden State's in 2012.

New Jersey will send Troy Murphy to Golden State, while the Warriors trade Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright to the Nets.

The Nets pursued Carmelo Anthony for months, but were ultimately unsuccessful as he preferred a trade to the Knicks. But the Nets were committed to acquiring a legitimate superstar and quickly were able to acquire Williams, who is eligible to be a free agent in 2012.

Williams is not eligible to sign an extension until July, pending the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement.

Deron Wants To Avoid Same Situation As Carmelo; Denies New York Rumors

Feb 21, 2011 3:14 PM

Deron Williams could be in a similar situation to Carmelo Anthony next season.

Williams can opt out of his deal and become a free agent in 2012, just as Anthony can do this summer.

"I definitely don't want to go through that," Williams said in reference to all the drama that has surrounded Anthony since training camp. "It's distracting. It can get to you. It's a pain."

Williams was asked how he's going to handle his situation.

"You can think whatever you want in your head but you just got to say the same thing out loud," Williams said. "I'm not going to answer any questions about it until it's that time. When I say, 'I'm going to opt out' or (there's another resolution) ... Then I'm going to say it (when Williams knows something) because I haven't decided what I'm going to do."

Williams also took the time to deny a report that he has told close friends he wants to sign with the Knicks in 2012.

"It's not credible," Williams said. "You can't put (the reporter) on the witness stand. You've got nothing to talk about."
