After being forced to sit his freshman season at Kentucky, Enes Kanter may miss a good part of his rookie season in the NBA due to its current lockout.
"It's easy for me to say that I am the unluckiest guy ever. I couldn't play in college, and right now there is the lockout. The only thing I can do is just wait," said Kanter.
Kanter was denied eligibility at Kentucky by the NCAA because he played nine games during the 08-09 season with Fenerbahce Ulker.
"I haven't played in almost two years and it's hard within that time to go from not playing to being ready for games," Kanter said.
"Those two years of not playing hurt him a little bit and he's a little lost in space," said Nihat Izic, mentor of Kanter.
"Sure, you can practice, but without playing games in two years, that's not easy to take care of five or six things on the court at once," Izic continued.
Enes Kanter is one of the prized prodigies of Nihat Izic, who was appointed by the Turkish Commission for Youth Basketball in 1994. Izic was asked to lead a new program for the development of young players in Turkey. The goal was to develop players that could compete for the Senior National Team.
"I've known him since he was like this," said Izic, bringing his right hand up to his waist.
"Enes was always a big kid and pushed the other kids around. He's always had the competitive mentality. That is inside of him. And if they are patient in Utah, they will see he can be a very important player."
Aydin Ors told Salsabasket.net that Fenerbahce Ulker had no plans to sign any new players.
Reports surfaced that Mehmet Okur had been in talks with the Turkish team.
Attempts to contact Okur's agent, Marc Fleisher, were unsuccessful.
Okur has one year and $10.9 million remaining on his contract with the Jazz.
Mehmet Okur is negotiating a contract with a team in Turkey.
According to MixBasket, Fenerbahce Istanbul and Okur are discussing a one-year deal with an out-clause when the NBA lockout ends.
