Fesenko To Work Out For Hawks

Oct 30, 2012 12:40 PM

After being waived by the Chicago Bulls, Kyrylo Fesenko will work out for the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday, a person close to the 7-foot-1 center told RealGM.

In an effort to stay in top shape for another opportunity, Fesenko had been training in Colorado since being cut on Oct. 18.

Fesenko told RealGM earlier this month that he passed up offers from other NBA teams in favor of the Bulls’ training camp invite. The 25-year-old was confident that he’d stick around with the Bulls because of his defensive mindset and familiarity, but the organization wasn’t in position to sign him to a guaranteed contract.

If Fesenko manages to land with the Hawks, he will reunite with former Utah Jazz teammate Kyle Korver – whom Fesenko had been excited to play alongside as a Bull before learning about Korver’s trade to Atlanta.

Fesenko has averaged 2.3 points and two rebounds over his five-year career with the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers, providing glimpses of strong defense to ensure his value.

Josh Smith Sees Lack Of Size As Hawks' Biggest Challenge

Oct 26, 2012 11:38 AM

The Atlanta Hawks have created uncertainty at the wing, as Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams were traded in the offseason. Both Johnson and Williams are two of the bigger wing players in the NBA.

Josh Smith sees their lack of size as the biggest challenge heading into the season.

"We were pretty good defensively the last couple of years," said Smith. "We’ve been pretty solid. We might just be a little undersized. We were undersized before but are very undersized now. But that shouldn’t be an issue. I think that we have a lot of feisty and competitive people on this team that hate to lose. I think that will outweigh the so-called decreases that this team has."

Hawks Replacing Iso-Heavy Offense With Johnson Departed

Oct 12, 2012 10:08 AM

With Joe Johnson no longer the centerpiece of the offense, the Atlanta Hawks have eliminated pages and pages from their playbook. The Hawks long featured Johnson in isolation situations.

“We’ve been in the past, predominately, a post-up team particularly at the 2-spot or the 3-spot with Joe,” head coach Larry Drew said recently. “We ran a lot of things through him. Now, we’ve got to change that.”

Jeff Teague said that the roster overhaul will help the Hawks be more creative and fast-paced.

“We’ll be mixing up what we do a lot more than we have in the past because I think from an overall standpoint I can run things through a number of different guys,” Drew said. “I think that should work to our advantage. It takes away the predictability about us. If we play together, if we share the basketball, I think we can be an effective team.”

Drew doesn't expect the offense to be fully installed until the regular season opener, so it is currently a simpler version.

“Sometimes simple is better,” Josh Smith said. “Sometimes I’d rather have a pizza than a Kobe steak, mashed potatoes and gravy. Sometimes you want to keep it simple where guys can get the hang of it and understand it.”

Josh Smith Focused On Leading Hawks To Playoffs, Not Contract

Oct 2, 2012 10:11 AM

The Atlanta Hawks are in "semi-rebuilding" mode as Josh Smith enters the final season of his contract.

“My mindset is making it to the playoffs,” Smith said. “I’m not worrying about any contract discussions. I think the team and I are on the same page. We know what we are going to do. My main concern is making the playoffs and winning basketball games.”

With Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams departed, there may be more room for Smith to operate.

“I think he has improved his outside shot,” Drew said. “I think he has to be a little bit more selective with his outside shot. He has certainly improved his low post game. I still think he can be even better. I think he’s one of the best power forwards in our league in rebounding out of his space and getting the ball and initiating the break. I think he is one of the best defenders in our league because he can defend all five positions. I think he is one of the smartest basketball players that I’ve coached. This guy sees things before they even take place. He is a student of the game. He watches a lot of film. Does he have to be better in how to deal with the officials? Yes he does.

“I think his overall game, his overall approach, he has to improve in all those areas. I think he knows that.”

Smith is likely to wait until the offseason to agree to a longer deal, as an extension would be for just three seasons.
