Johnson: Hawks 'Too Self-Conscious About Scoring'

Feb 22, 2012 10:21 AM

Joe Johnson explained why the Hawks have a motivation problem and play with a lack of energy at times.

"When I look at our team, we are a very talented team, but I [don't know] whether guys know their roles or not," Johnson said. "We know the right thing to do. A lot of times we don't come out and do it. I just think we should all have one agenda, one goal and that is winning the basketball game. Not who scores what, who does what. I think we are too self conscious about [who is] scoring and the little things that really don't matter. For us to win the game we have to put all of that to the side and help one another on both ends of the floor. If we don't do that, we are going to continue to struggle to win games. I think we have to put a lot into perspective about how good we want to be as a team or what direction we are headed in or what are our goals. Right now I'm not sure if everyone has that one common goal – and that is winning.

"We've had spurts where we've played great together. The ball movement has been great. We've had times when we haven't been so great. Times we haven't been so great, we have struggled as a team. I know it's noticeable. I think we just have to start getting the ball into the right people's hands who make plays, who score the basketball and make others better. That's it."

McGrady Upset Over Lack Of Playing Time

Feb 19, 2012 11:57 AM

Tracy McGrady is frustrated with his disappearing reserve role.

“I’m tired of this [bleep],” McGrady said after logging just 4:39 during the 97-77 loss to the Blazers late Saturday. “You can put that in the paper, I don’t give a [bleep].”

McGrady said coach Larry Drew hasn’t offered him an explanation when he doesn’t play him many minutes.

“If you don’t feel I can help, come tell me that,” McGrady said. “He ain’t told me nothing. I just want to help these guys win, man, which I know I can. But, damn, four minutes?”

McGrady is eligible for a trade on March 1, but indicated he would prefer to remain with the Hawks.

“Hopefully, I’m here,” he said. “I like it here. I like the guys. That’s what I love most about it. I like the guys in this locker room. But at the same time, I still can play. No doubt in my mind.”

Josh Smith Blames All-Star Snub On 'Politics'

Feb 11, 2012 2:20 PM

Josh Smith was left off the All-Star roster by the Eastern Conference coaches, who picked the reserves earlier this week.

“You’ve got to factor in there is a lot of politics involved in the All-Star selection,” Smith said Friday. “Once you get that it’s really about politics, then nothing really surprises you. I call it ‘Nothing But Associates,’ NBA. It’s all who you know.”

Andre Iguodala, Paul Pierce, and Luol Deng were chosen as reserve forwards.

Smith said “I guess I don’t know the right people” and didn’t have people lobbying on his behalf.

“I can’t really point a finger and blame anybody because, at the end of the day, when you leave it up to certain people that still have ties to their agents, [and] players in this game today probably [are] just putting in a bid over the phone, or however they do it,” he said. “You have to factor that in.”
